[TV] M.I.A - Revenge has a price

I have no idea how I came across this series. I think the poster caught my eye, and I watched the trailer. I was looking for a series that was easy to watch, entertaining, and new. I might like certain stories, certain movies, but I love all of this in general; I'm never closed off to watching a Hollywood production. Besides, it's always good to watch some light entertainment every now and then.

So far, I've seen five of the nine episodes that make up this season. I'd say it's a series that deals with the common themes in stories involving the mafia and revenge: drug trafficking, a patriarch of a dying criminal empire, the sons who assume power and are complete idiots who ruin everything, especially one, the most violent, who believes that killing everyone who gets in his way will make the business grow.

The story is set in Miami, and I think that's a big plus. It's a place full of Latin Americans, Caribbean flavor, nightclubs, luxury, beaches, and women. It's in this environment that we meet the protagonist of the story, the young Etta Tiger Jonze, who seems to have a bright future. She's quick-witted, and her parents plan to send her to the University of Miami so she won't go into the family business. They work for mobsters and transport drugs for them.

That's all I can tell you to give you some context. The story itself deals with revenge. How many stories about revenge have you seen? Probably thousands, because revenge is something that works perfectly to tell a story. We want those who hurt us to be hurt in return. We want those who make us suffer to suffer greatly. That's what Etta wants: revenge. To end the lives of the people who have inflicted such great and irreparable pain upon her.

The series has some pretty far-fetched moments, like how some characters survive, the friends they make, and how they gradually reach their goals. These situations wouldn't really fit in a more realistic work, but since this is a story meant to be taken purely as entertainment, it's all worthwhile and even funny at times.

When I was watching the fourth episode, I felt a bit desperate because, up to that point, the girl hadn't started her revenge. Neither of the two men responsible for her misfortune had been brought down. That worried me, and I considered not watching it, since they might just cancel it. Damn. But fortunately, I looked for information on our trusty Google, and I found official information from Paramount, the parent production company, which, along with its creators, has confirmed that the story has been renewed for a second season and that they want to expand it for more seasons. That relieved me, and I decided to keep watching.

The creators were part of the team behind the excellent Ozark, but it has nothing to do with that series. It doesn't have the same tone, nor does it compare. It's a much smaller series, and it doesn't try to be taken seriously. I saw an opinion on Twitter saying it was the new Ozark, just because the creators were also behind Ozark, but to be honest, that's just a marketing ploy to sell the show. They're stories with very different styles. Yes, there are dramas and gangsters, but they're different.

I think the great discovery of this series is the actress Shannon Gisela, who was completely unknown to the masses. I think she also worked as a voice actress. I started looking into who the actress is because I saw that she does a pretty good job; her character is charismatic and engaging, and I found out that her mother is Venezuelan. I know Venezuelans love to know when someone, even if they have roots in the country, is achieving success in the arts.

For now, I'm watching one episode a day, enjoying it little by little. I already know there will be a second season, and I'm expecting a big cliffhanger in the last episode. It's a great series to pass the time; I recommend it.

No tengo ni idea de cómo di con esta serie. Creo que me llamó la atención el póster y vi el tráiler. Buscaba una serie fácil de ver, entretenida y novedosa. Puede que me gusten ciertas historias o ciertas películas, pero en general me encanta todo esto; nunca me cierro a ver una producción de Hollywood. Además, siempre viene bien ver algo ligero de vez en cuando.

Hasta ahora, he visto cinco de los nueve episodios de esta temporada. Diría que es una serie que trata los temas comunes en las historias de la mafia y la venganza: el narcotráfico, el patriarca de un imperio criminal en decadencia, los hijos que toman el poder y son unos completos idiotas que lo arruinan todo, especialmente uno, el más violento, que cree que matar a cualquiera que se interponga en su camino hará crecer el negocio.

La historia se desarrolla en Miami, y creo que eso es un gran punto a favor. Es un lugar lleno de latinoamericanos, ambiente caribeño, discotecas, lujo, playas y mujeres. Es en este entorno donde conocemos a la protagonista de la historia, la joven Etta Tiger Jonze, quien parece tener un futuro prometedor. Es ingeniosa y sus padres planean enviarla a la Universidad de Miami para que no se involucre en el negocio familiar. Trabajan para mafiosos transportando drogas para ellos.

Eso es todo lo que puedo decirles para darles un poco de contexto. La historia trata sobre la venganza. ¿Cuántas historias de venganza han visto? Probablemente miles, porque la venganza es un recurso narrativo perfecto. Queremos que quienes nos lastiman sufran a cambio. Queremos que quienes nos hacen sufrir, sufran mucho. Eso es lo que Etta quiere: venganza. Acabar con la vida de quienes le han infligido un dolor tan grande e irreparable.

La serie tiene algunos momentos bastante inverosímiles, como la forma en que algunos personajes sobreviven, las amistades que forjan y cómo gradualmente alcanzan sus objetivos. Estas situaciones no encajarían en una obra más realista, pero como esta historia está pensada para ser puro entretenimiento, vale la pena e incluso resulta divertida a veces.

Cuando vi el cuarto episodio, me sentí un poco desesperado porque, hasta ese momento, la chica no había comenzado su venganza. Ninguno de los dos hombres responsables de su desgracia había sido derrotado. Eso me preocupó y pensé en dejar de verla, ya que podrían cancelarla. ¡Maldita sea! Pero, por suerte, busqué información en nuestro fiel Google y encontré información oficial de Paramount, la productora, que, junto con sus creadores, confirmó que la historia ha sido renovada para una segunda temporada y que quieren ampliarla para más temporadas. Eso me tranquilizó y decidí seguir viéndola.

Los creadores formaron parte del equipo detrás de la excelente Ozark, pero no tiene nada que ver con esa serie. No tiene el mismo tono ni se compara. Es una serie mucho más pequeña y no pretende ser tomada en serio. Vi una opinión en Twitter que decía que era la nueva Ozark, solo porque los creadores también estaban detrás de Ozark, pero para ser honesto, eso es solo una estrategia de marketing para vender la serie. Son historias con estilos muy diferentes. Sí, hay dramas y gánsteres, pero son diferentes.

Creo que el gran descubrimiento de esta serie es la actriz Shannon Gisela, completamente desconocida para el público general. Creo que también trabajaba como actriz de doblaje. Empecé a investigar quién era la actriz porque vi que hace un trabajo bastante bueno; su personaje es carismático y cautivador, y descubrí que su madre es venezolana. Sé que a los venezolanos les encanta saber cuando alguien, incluso si tiene raíces en el país, triunfa en las artes.

Por ahora, estoy viendo un episodio al día, disfrutándola poco a poco. Ya sé que habrá una segunda temporada y espero un gran final de infarto en el último episodio. Es una serie genial para pasar el rato; la recomiendo.
