[Movie] Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight

I’ve continued watching Polish films, and recently I saw one that became a hit when Netflix added it to its catalog. Among the many movies on my watchlist, this Polish slasher finally had its turn, and I really enjoyed it. It wasn't until I finished watching it that I learned a sequel exists; I hope to watch it soon and share my thoughts on that as well.

Although Hollywood popularized and mass-marketed this horror subgenre back in the 80s, its roots actually lie in Italy—specifically in the giallo subgenre. It draws heavily from that style, even though Hollywood tweaked it to create a new version that quickly became a trend. I remember loving to go to the movies on Mondays when I was younger—back when tickets were cheaper in my country—to catch a slasher flick.

Like all subgenres, this one eventually suffered from a bit of burnout after so many films exploited the formula to death. But no genre stays dead forever; in the mid-90s—starting, I believe, with the Scream franchise—there was a slasher revival. Titles like I Know What You Did Last Summer emerged, along with others whose names escape me right now; that resurgence prompted Hollywood studios to launch new teen slasher projects, with varying degrees of success. Oh! I just remembered another title I liked from that era: House of Wax, starring Paris Hilton.

It is a subgenre that has all the ingredients for mass appeal: young people looking for a good time, sex, beautiful girls, and, of course, the murders of various characters at the hands of a villain or villains—whether they be human killers, creatures, monsters, or whatever else the movie throws at them. That is the foundation of all these films. You can't have a movie like this without a female lead—the so-called "Scream Queen"—since there’s plenty of screaming involved, at least in Hollywood films.

That’s why I decided to watch this Polish movie; you don’t come across a Polish slasher every day. It draws inspiration from 80s Hollywood slasher cinema, and I found it quite entertaining. It’s far better than the recent North American slashers I’ve seen; for instance, I think the latest Scream installments are absolute garbage.

The film follows a group of young people sent to a camp to detox from their addictions to the internet, smartphones, video games, social media, and so on. Being cut off from technology adds an element of anxiety, as they have no way to communicate with anyone. The camp premise is a bit far-fetched, but that doesn't matter; we’re here to enjoy watching these idiotic kids get killed off and to find out who the hell manages to survive. It’s not the kind of movie that demands strict logic.

You can tell the special effects—both for the deaths and the killer—were done old-school style, which I loved. The setting (a remote forest filled with quirky characters) clearly draws from genre classics. Everything works really well. As for the group of young victims, they fit the usual stereotypes but with a distinctive Polish style and sensibility that made the movie very appealing to me.

I enjoyed every single death scene. I love cinematic kills. I’m fascinated by severed heads and arms, and buckets of blood and guts. Damn, it takes me back to my youth; I used to really enjoy these kinds of movies. Well, I still do; I might be getting on in years, but deep down I’ve still got that youthful energy and I like having a good time.

The movie has humor, too; there were moments that made me laugh. This isn't a film that demands to be taken too seriously; it’s meant for relaxing and having fun. Some of the characters are rather eccentric, and even the occasional death has a comic side to it—a great touch that works really well in this movie.

The film is directed by Polish filmmaker Bartosz M. Kowalski. Looking at his filmography, I see he has quite a few horror movies under his belt, which I’m already starting to check out. Beyond the sequel to this film, there are other titles I hope to watch soon to appreciate his evolution as a director within the genre.

He seguido viendo películas polacas y hace poco vi una que se convirtió en un éxito cuando Netflix la añadió a su catálogo. Entre las muchas películas de mi lista de pendientes, por fin le llegó el turno a este slasher polaco, y realmente lo disfruté. No fue hasta que terminé de verla que me enteré de que existe una secuela; espero verla pronto y compartir también mis impresiones al respecto.

Aunque Hollywood popularizó y comercializó masivamente este subgénero de terror allá por los lejanos años 80, sus raíces se encuentran en realidad en Italia, concretamente en el subgénero giallo. Se nutre enormemente de ese estilo, si bien Hollywood lo modificó para crear una nueva versión que rápidamente se convirtió en tendencia. Recuerdo que de joven me encantaba ir al cine los lunes —cuando las entradas eran más baratas en mi país— para ver alguna película slasher.

Como todos los subgéneros, este acabó sufriendo cierto desgaste después de que tantas películas explotaran la fórmula hasta la saciedad. Pero ningún género permanece muerto para siempre; a mediados de los años 90 —creo que a partir de la saga Scream— hubo un resurgimiento del slasher. También surgieron títulos como Sé lo que hicisteis el último verano y otros cuyos nombres no recuerdo ahora mismo, pero aquel renacimiento impulsó a los estudios de Hollywood a lanzar nuevos proyectos de slasher juvenil, algunos con más éxito que otros. ¡Ah! Acabo de recordar otro título que me gustó de aquella época: La casa de cera (House of Wax), protagonizada por Paris Hilton.

Es un subgénero que reúne todos los ingredientes para gustar: jóvenes que buscan divertirse, sexo, chicas guapas y, por supuesto, los asesinatos de los distintos personajes a manos del villano o los villanos —ya sean asesinos humanos, criaturas, monstruos o cualquier otra cosa que la película les ponga delante. Esa es la base de todas estas películas. No puede faltar la protagonista femenina —la llamada «Scream Queen» o «reina del grito»—, ya ​​que hay muchos gritos de por medio, al menos en las películas de Hollywood.

Por eso decidí ver esta película polaca; no se encuentra un slasher polaco todos los días. Se inspira en el cine slasher de Hollywood de los años 80 y me pareció bastante entretenida. Es mucho mejor que las recientes películas slasher norteamericanas que he visto; por ejemplo, las últimas entregas de Scream me parecen una basura absoluta.

En esta película seguimos a un grupo de jóvenes enviados a un campamento para desintoxicarse de sus adicciones a internet, los teléfonos inteligentes, los videojuegos, las redes sociales, etcétera. El hecho de estar aislados de la tecnología añade un componente de ansiedad, ya que no pueden comunicarse con nadie. La premisa del campamento resulta un tanto inverosímil, pero eso no importa; estamos aquí para disfrutar viendo cómo matan a estos jóvenes idiotas y descubrir quién demonios logra sobrevivir. No es el tipo de película en la que se exija una lógica estricta.

Se nota que los efectos especiales —tanto los de las muertes como los del asesino— se realizaron al estilo de la vieja escuela, algo que me encantó. La ambientación (un bosque remoto lleno de personajes peculiares) bebe claramente de los clásicos del género. Todo funciona muy bien. En cuanto al grupo de jóvenes víctimas, encajan en los estereotipos habituales, pero con un estilo y una sensibilidad polacos distintivos que hicieron que la película me resultara muy atractiva.

Disfruté de cada una de las escenas de muerte. Me encantan las muertes cinematográficas. Me fascinan las cabezas y brazos cercenados, los cubos de sangre y vísceras. Maldita sea, me transporta a mi juventud; solía disfrutar muchísimo de este tipo de películas. Bueno, sigo disfrutándolas; puede que ya tenga cierta edad, pero por dentro conservo la energía juvenil y me gusta pasarlo bien.

La película también tiene humor; hubo cosas que me hicieron reír. No es un filme que exija tomarse todo demasiado en serio; está hecho para relajarse y divertirse. Algunos personajes son algo excéntricos e incluso alguna que otra muerte tiene su lado cómico. Es un gran acierto que funciona muy bien en esta cinta.

La película está dirigida por el cineasta polaco Bartosz M. Kowalski. Al revisar su filmografía, veo que cuenta con bastantes películas de terror, las cuales ya estoy empezando a investigar. Más allá de la secuela de esta misma cinta, hay otros títulos que espero ver pronto para apreciar su evolución como director dentro del género.
