[Movie] The Isolate Thief

No matter how much some people say the Western is dead, for me it's still a genre I enjoy. Perhaps they don't make as many films as they did in the last century, but at least one is still released every year. So, the idea that this genre is dead is something they've been saying ever since Unforgiven won the Oscar. Nonsense! Last year, one of the best miniseries released was a Western.

And here I am recommending this cowboy movie, the one about gunmen and the untamed land. It's a modest film that I quite enjoyed. It doesn't have an ambitious story or grand landscapes; it may have a modest budget, but it's a decent film.

Almost all the action takes place in a single location, a guard post, where the man in charge has died, leaving his daughter, practically a teenager, waiting for answers about what to do with her life. A young woman, isolated in that inhospitable place, will soon find herself surrounded by wolves, but not wild wolves, rather human wolves, of the most dangerous kind.

It's a game of seeing who gets away with it. Who can deceive whom. On one side is Ada, who is presented with the opportunity of a lifetime. A new beginning, although what she has to do might not be good, but she doesn't imagine the consequences. She's quite self-assured and believes she can outwit the Fiddler, as they call the man who leads the group that arrives in that place looking for something they claim belongs to them.

I won't deny that there's a certain lack of credibility in the fact that Ada, as they call the young woman, isn't immediately attacked by these bandits. Young, beautiful, alone. In those wild lands, and knowing these men, it's hard to believe they didn't arrive immediately, violent and ruthless, especially when the Fiddler presents himself as someone truly cruel.

That said, the conflict between Ada and the Fiddler is entertaining. Excellent work by Mackenzie Foy and Sean Bean. Ah, yes, Sean Bean, that actor who almost always plays characters with tragic endings and whom many will only remember as Ned Stark in Game of Thrones. He's playing the villain in this story. Want to bet he'll come out on top or meet a bad end?

I liked the tone, set in winter. The cinematography is appealing; without needing to show vast landscapes, it manages to convey that feeling of isolation. The rest of the cast also perfectly fulfills their roles. It's a film that would have previously been made straight to video rental, but now works as content for streaming platforms.

For me, it has everything you need for an entertaining time with a Wild West story, complete with shootouts and deaths. It's also a very feminist film, since the two women in the cast are practically the protagonists who must survive those wolves searching for something that belongs to them and was stolen from them.

An entertaining Western that you'll enjoy if you like the genre. It's available on Prime Video. Watch it this weekend and tell me what you think.

Por mucho que algunos digan que el western está muerto, para mí sigue siendo un género que disfruto. Quizás ya no se hagan tantas películas como en el siglo pasado, pero aún se estrena al menos una cada año. Así que, la idea de que este género está muerto es algo que llevan diciendo desde que Sin perdón ganó el Óscar. ¡Tonterías! El año pasado, una de las mejores miniseries estrenadas fue un western.

Y aquí estoy yo recomendando esta película de vaqueros, la de los pistoleros y la tierra indómita. Es una película modesta que disfruté bastante. No tiene una historia ambiciosa ni grandes paisajes; puede que tenga un presupuesto modesto, pero es una película decente.

Casi toda la acción transcurre en un solo lugar, un puesto de guardia, donde el responsable ha muerto, dejando solo a su hija, que es prácticamente una adolescente, esperando respuestas sobre qué hacer con su vida. Una joven, aislada en aquel lugar inhóspito, pronto se verá rodeada de lobos, pero no lobos salvajes, sino lobos humanos, de la especie más peligrosa.

Es un juego de ver quién sale impune. Quién logra engañar a quién. Por un lado está Ada, a quien se le presenta la oportunidad de su vida. Un nuevo comienzo, aunque quizás lo que tenga que hacer no sea bueno, pero no imagina las consecuencias. Está bastante segura de sí misma y cree que puede engañar al Violinista, como llaman al hombre que lidera al grupo que llega a aquel lugar buscando algo que dicen que le pertenece.

No negaré que hay cierta falta de credibilidad en el hecho de que Ada, como llaman a la joven, no sea inmediatamente agredida por estos bandidos. Joven, hermosa, sola. En esas tierras salvajes, y conociendo a estos hombres, cuesta creer que no llegaran de inmediato, violentos y despiadados, sobre todo cuando el violinista se presenta como alguien verdaderamente cruel.

Dicho esto, el conflicto entre Ada y el violinista es entretenido. Excelente trabajo de Mackenzie Foy y Sean Bean. Ah, sí, Sean Bean, ese actor que casi siempre interpreta personajes con malos finales y al que muchos solo recordarán como Ned Stark en Juego de Tronos. Le toca ser el villano de esta historia. ¿Apostamos a que saldrá victorioso o acabará mal?

Me gustó el tono, ambientado en invierno. La cinematografía es atractiva; sin necesidad de mostrar vastos paisajes, logra transmitir esa sensación de aislamiento. El resto del reparto también cumple a la perfección con sus papeles. Es una película que antes se habría hecho directamente para alquiler de vídeo, pero ahora funciona como contenido para plataformas de streaming.

Para mí, tiene todo lo necesario para pasar un rato entretenido con una historia del Oeste salvaje, con sus tiroteos y muertes. Además, es una película muy feminista, ya que las dos mujeres del reparto son prácticamente las protagonistas que deben sobrevivir a esos lobos que buscan algo que les pertenece y que les fue robado.
