Ever since I was a child, I grew up hearing about Mark Twain—especially in the movies I used to watch—but I had never read any of his works in my life, which is surprising given how famous he is. However, the day finally came when I discovered him. So I want to share my thoughts on one of his books, which, while not his most famous, is still quite well-known. It’s The Adventures of Huck Finn.
I have to start by saying that what hooked me about this book was its very first sentence. The fact that the author wrote a kind of joke that somehow plays on reverse psychology really grabs you, in my opinion. However, as I began reading the book, I realized that this wasn’t—at least for my taste—the first book I should have read by this author. I feel I should have read Tom Sawyer first to clarify a couple of points, but this is a matter of personal preference.
The book tells the story of our protagonist, Huck Finn, a boy with a rather strong personality who is entering adolescence. Even at his young age, he had already shown that he was hard to break in any way and also that he was quite strong for his age. From the very beginning, you encounter a boy who is fighting to keep his identity intact—a boy who grew up with many deprivations, especially a lack of love.
He finds himself exposed to a world he didn’t know and to a host of rules and demands for which he wasn’t prepared and to which he never managed to adapt. The moment his life changed and he left that environment, he found himself immediately in an even worse one—one where he didn’t feel safe and was exposed to situations that clearly made him wish he weren’t there. It was precisely this inner strength—this desire to survive and be okay—that motivated him to make a decision that led him to experience so many things, or, perhaps I should say, many “adventures.”

Among all these experiences he went through was someone who came to be an important person in his life: Jim, his friend. You could say they were in a similar situation, and because of that, they grew quite close. Once you understand the full context of this friendship, it’s impossible not to grow fond of him—especially given that, up until that point, Huck had been indirectly taught to hate and despise Jim.
Together, they went through many experiences that made their friendship grow stronger and stronger. Although they only spent a few months together, they went through so much that it was inevitable they would bond in a way that only two people who’ve been through tough times can. I have to say that reading this book was quite a smooth experience for me; I stayed engaged and entertained, and the way it’s written made me enjoy it immensely.
It also made me reflect on a few things that I obviously want to share with you. One of them—and I’d say the most striking—was kindness. These days, the world is in a terrible state, and there’s far too much hatred. It’s all too easy for a single comment to stir up the masses and trigger a barrage of harmful, malicious remarks. Basically, we’re learning today that a single action by an imperfect person can lead to them being judged negatively.

Just like in the book, we’re somehow taught that we should hate or look down on others if they say or do something in a certain way. Although the book is old and deals with a topic that isn’t as common as it used to be, I feel that, just like Huck, no matter what everyone else says, we have to do the right thing—and love and protect those who, in some way, need our help. Or, instead of judging others, we should simply get to know them. We might even end up forming a beautiful friendship simply because we gave someone the chance to show who they really are.
Another thing it made me think about is what people are willing to do for money—even harming defenseless beings who are just beginning to grow into adults. Unfortunately, these days parents are responsible for many of the problems their children face. The fact that, for money, some people don’t do their jobs properly and cause harm or trauma to the very people they’re supposed to protect is something that honestly terrifies me.
I also thought a lot about how incredibly important the way we grow up and what we’re taught from a young age really is. No matter what our personality is, when we suffer harm at such a young age, adapting to certain environments is simply impossible—especially if what we see in those environments causes us to suffer in some way. When a child grows up in a hostile environment, it’s very difficult for them to adapt in a healthy way to any setting where they sense even the slightest hint of hostility.
I feel like this is a really good book to read, and I know I read it late, but even so, I feel like it was the right time for me to read it. I really like books that tell stories with so many lessons applicable even to today’s society, which—although it seems to have left some bad habits in the past—still harbors them, disguised as something else. I don’t know if you’ve read Tom Sawyer, but I can assure you that this was a good read.
