Our trip to Playa Sardinata went pretty well, with a nice surprise full of history. When we were about to visit this small river island with its beautiful view last year, someone pointed out to us in the distance that in a certain area of the beach—specifically to my left—we could see a cluster of stones in the very spot where we might find petroglyphs.
There are several such sites, but to be honest, I’ve never been to any of them, and this is my first time seeing original stones carved by indigenous people. It was a fun adventure because, although the motorcyclist pointed out the area where we could find them, the truth is that it was a place filled with countless stones, so it wasn’t an easy task. This is because, even though everything looks very clear from a distance, once you’re there and everything is overwhelmingly large, you lose your bearings.

En nuestro viaje a Playa Sardinata nos fue bastante bien, con una bonita sorpresa llena de historia. Cuando íbamos a estar el año pasado en esta pequeña isla de río con hermosa vista, se nos señaló a lo lejos que hacia cierta zona de la playa, específicamente a mi izquierda, podríamos ver un montón de piedras agrupadas en el mismo sitio en el que podríamos conseguir petroglifos.
Hay varios que se pueden conseguir, pero la verdad es que no he ido nunca a ninguno de ellos y esta es mi primera vez viendo piedras originales talladas por indígenas. Fue una aventura divertida porque, si bien el motorista nos señaló la zona en la que podríamos conseguirlos, la verdad es que era un sitio lleno de muchísimas piedras, así que no fue una tarea fácil. Esto se debe a que, si bien desde cierta distancia ves todo muy claro, cuando estás en el sitio y todo es abrumadoramente grande, ya no puedes ubicarte.
We went with a group of friends to find these petroglyphs, and we spent several minutes walking around and searching, trying to get a good look at the rocks and keeping our eyes peeled so we could find what we were looking for. After quite a while, we finally found some—three, to be exact. Honestly, I was really impressed by how durable these rock carvings are.
I was really surprised to learn that, although no one knows exactly how old these marked stones are, they’re said to be between 1,000 and 2,000 years old. It seems crazy to me that they’ve lasted that long and remain intact, especially because, as I mentioned in my previous post about Playa Sardinata, this island disappears for much of the year—and with it, all these rocks that have been exposed to the sun, sand, and water.

Nos fuimos con un grupo de amigos a conseguir estos petroglifos y ahí estuvimos varios minutos caminando y buscando, tratando de detallar bien las piedras y siendo muy observadores para poder conseguir lo que fuimos a buscar. Después de un rato largo finalmente conseguimos algunos, específicamente tres. La verdad es que me parecía demasiado impresionante cómo estos grabados en roca son tan duraderos.
Me sorprendió mucho saber que, aunque no se sabe el tiempo exacto que tienen estas piedras marcadas ahí, dicen que pueden tener entre 1000 y 2000 años. Me parece muy loco esa cantidad de tiempo y que se mantengan intactas, especialmente porque, como mencioné en la publicación anterior en la que hablé de Playa Sardinata, esta isla desaparece en gran parte del año y con ella todas estas rocas que han estado expuestas al sol, la arena y el agua.
The truth is, I really enjoyed collecting these engravings and the whole experience, but beyond that, it was like traveling back in time to see something someone made so long ago. While it’s difficult to know their meanings, they surely had them and were quite important—some marked routes, others told stories, and so on—even though we don’t know for sure today.
Most of these petroglyphs were created by the Jivi and Piaroa ethnic groups, who make up the majority of Puerto Ayacucho’s population. The best thing about this place is the idea that it’s a site that emerges at specific times and is covered by the river most of the time. I really enjoyed seeing what was once considered a form of communication—and how it was created in such a natural way that it has survived to this day for us to see.

La verdad es que me gustó mucho conseguir estos grabados y toda esta experiencia, pero más allá de esto fue como viajar en el tiempo al ver algo que hizo alguien hace tanto tiempo. Si bien es complejo saber sus significados, seguramente los tenían y eran bastante importantes, pues algunos marcaban rutas, otros contaban historias y así, aunque actualmente no se sepa a ciencia cierta.
La mayoría de estos petroglifos fueron hechos por las etnias Jivi y Piaroa, que son las que ocupan la mayor parte de la población de Puerto Ayacucho. Lo mejor de este lugar es la idea de que es un sitio que sale a relucir en momentos específicos y que la mayor parte del tiempo está cubierto por el río. Me gustó muchísimo ver lo que antes fue considerado una forma de comunicación y que lo hayan hecho de una manera tan natural para que se mantenga hasta el día de hoy y podamos verlo.
