The Hydrangea Garden - Colonia Tovar / A Beautiful Spot in the Mountains [Esp-Eng]

During my visit to Colonia Tovar, I discovered and revisited some incredible places, and this time I want to tell you about El Jardín de las Hortencias—a place that, even though I’d been there before, always leaves you just as impressed as if it were your first time. I understand that it’s one of the routes located a bit higher up, and just like the other places, we got there in a 4x4 that can handle the fairly steep climbs.

Since it’s a mountainous area, being there is a real spectacle—a place surrounded by lush green vegetation and with spectacular weather. It’s cool, and the mist accompanies you the whole way. On the day we went, there were many people in this area, all with the same goal: to take a great photo in such a beautiful spot. In fact, many go there solely for this reason, although in our case, we also went to enjoy the view and the weather.

I didn’t time it very well, but I have to say it took us at least 20 minutes to get there—though it’s hard to estimate the time since we were touring several sites and planned to cover it all in two hours. The thing is, this was one of the last places we visited just as we were about to head back to the town of Colonia Tovar. The truth is, the time we spent there was short compared to what we’d hoped for, but it was enough to really appreciate it for a good little while.

Since the area is mountainous, everything is steep, so there are uphill and downhill paths everywhere, and of course, all around are the famous hydrangeas—which I must say are some of the most beautiful flowers I’ve ever seen in my life. The first time I saw that flower was right here, at the Hydrangea Garden, a few years ago, and honestly, it feels amazing to see so many beautiful flowers in one place—it looks like a sea of bridal bouquets.

There are places that simply make you appreciate the beauty of creation, and I have to say this is one of those places for me, although I’ve been told there are times of the year when it looks even more beautiful. It looked truly stunning when we visited, so I can’t even imagine what it must be like at its peak. The flowers were everywhere, and because they were in such a cool spot, they stayed lush and beautiful. The truth is that flowers like these can only thrive in places with this kind of climate, and I know this because years ago I bought a little pot with one of them, and because of the heat where I live, it didn’t survive.

This will always be a beautiful place to visit, and even though it’s quite a distance from where I live and requires careful planning to get there, the truth is that when everything falls into place and I’m able to visit, I enjoy it to the fullest—because to me, it’s truly amazing that places like this exist in such a natural setting. After a while, when our time at this stop was up, we had to leave, but we left happy and satisfied because we’d had a pleasant time.

While it’s not a place you’d go to make specific plans, the truth is that what I love about visiting the Hydrangea Garden is that it’s a purely visual experience where you inevitably connect with what you’re taking in, because the conditions are perfect—you’re in a place that’s not only secluded but also cool, where everything around you is nature: plants, mountains, and a sky that seems closer than usual because of the altitude you’re at—and experiences like these are the best for me.
