La película trata sobre un matrimonio, Jack y Wendy, quienes tienen un hijo llamado Danny. Jack es un escritor en busca de inspiración a quien le dan la oportunidad de ser el cuidador de un hotel muy famoso llamado el Hotel Overlook. The movie is about a married couple, Jack and Wendy, who have a son named Danny. Jack is a writer in search of inspiration who is offered the opportunity to become the caretaker of a very famous hotel called the Overlook Hotel. Wendy, Danny, and Jack travel there to get to know the place where they’ll be living for the next few months, to check out the opportunity that’s come their way, and, of course, Jack hopes to find plenty of inspiration.
As time goes on, Jack realizes that many strange things are happening he sees images where there are none, observes people, and experiences inspiration that resurfaces out of nowhere. However, Wendy and Danny sense that the situation is heading in the wrong direction. Danny has very peculiar visions and thoughts, as he possesses an ability that allows him to see beyond the ordinary. Because of this, everything that happens at the hotel becomes very strange and eerie.

Es una película que tenía muchísimas ganas de ver desde hace tiempo. Aún no he tenido la oportunidad de leer el libro de Stephen King aunque me encantaría hacerlo más adelante para comparar ambas versiones, pero decidí lanzarme directamente con la adaptación cinematográfica. Aparte de contar con un gran actor como Jack Nicholson, me llamaba mucho la atención ver el trasfondo de la historia, las actuaciones, la dirección de Stanley Kubrick y ese apartado visual y de fotografía que siempre se comenta.
Entrando en el tema de las actuaciones, me pareció un trabajo muy bueno por parte de todo el elenco
This is a movie I’ve been really looking forward to seeing for a long time. I haven’t had the chance to read Stephen King’s book yet though I’d love to do so later to compare the two versions but I decided to dive right into the film adaptation. Aside from featuring a great actor like Jack Nicholson, I was really drawn to the story’s background, the performances, Stanley Kubrick’s direction, and the visuals and cinematography that are always talked about.

I found Jack Nicholson’s performance truly eerie, and it scared me to death. It felt as though I wasn’t watching an actor, but the person himself conveying that horror to me on screen. I could clearly sense how his mind was gradually deteriorating and how he was spiraling into an indescribable madness until he became a terrifying presence within the hotel.
Por otro lado el papel de Shelley Duvall me pareció sumamente acertado. Logra transmitir de forma muy sincera lo genuino de su instinto maternal, la manera en que cuida a Danny, cómo intenta apoyar a Jack y el esfuerzo constante por mantener a su familia unida, incluso cuando la situación se vuelve insostenible. On the other hand, I thought Shelley Duvall’s performance was spot on. She manages to convey, in a very sincere way, the authenticity of her maternal instinct the way she cares for Danny, how she tries to support Jack, and her constant effort to keep her family together, even when the situation becomes unbearable. I was able to put myself in her shoes and feel all her despair firsthand.

I thought Danny’s performance was very sweet and natural. You can really see a child exploring and making his way through the endless hallways of this hotel, trying to understand what’s happening around him. With his special ability called the “shining,” he senses and sees terrifying and strange things that are beyond his comprehension. Furthermore, the presence of his “imaginary friend” Tony who had already warned him about the dangers of the Overlook Hotel before they even arrived adds a very well executed sense of dread right from the start. Plus, the fact that your own father is trying to take your life is tragic and shocking, and that mix of confusion and pure terror was conveyed incredibly well.
Scatman Crothers el actor que interpreta a Dick Hallorann que aunque sus apariciones son breves, me pareció un complemento totalmente necesario. De hecho, su personaje fue una de las razones principales por las que me animé a ver la película, ya que hace poco me vi la serie Bienvenidos a Derry y me pareció súper interesante ver la conexión y el trasfondo de este personaje en la historia original.
Scatman Crothers, the actor who plays Dick Hallorann, made a brief appearance but struck me as an absolutely essential addition. In fact, his character was one of the main reasons I decided to watch the movie, since I recently watched the series Welcome to Derry and found it incredibly interesting to see the connection and backstory of this character in the original story.

There were areas of the hotel with geometric patterns and very striking colors that looked great visually. However, the most intriguing thing is that, despite looking beautiful and colorful, it also managed to convey a constant sense of strangeness and unease. They knew how to connect the physical space with the actors’ performances; the setting isn’t just a backdrop, but another character that amplifies the story’s tension. Among my favorite scenes are the carpeted hallway where Danny meets the twins and the scene in the bright red bathroom.

Algo que me llamó muchísimo la atención pensando en la psicología de los personajes es la dinámica con Jack. Es impresionante ver cómo el hotel literalmente parece estar vivo y le empieza a dar a Jack todo lo que él tanto desea, de la nada le llega una creatividad y una inspiración casi absurda para su libro. Sin embargo, esa inspiración venía con un costo altísimo su propia cordura y su estado mental.
Something that really caught my attention when thinking about the characters’ psychology is the dynamic with Jack. It’s striking to see how the hotel literally seems to be alive and begins to give Jack everything he so desperately desires out of nowhere, he’s struck by an almost absurd surge of creativity and inspiration for his book. However, that inspiration came at a very high cost his own sanity and mental state.

That’s where the hotel’s mysterious entities and ghosts come in which, for me personally, evoked a great deal of fear, strangeness, and unease. These presences plant the idea in Jack’s head that he has always been the caretaker, offering him everything he wants as long as he fulfills one horrifying condition to destroy his own family.

Para concluir, El Resplandor me pareció una película excelente. Ahora que se acerca la época de Halloween, me parece una propuesta superinteresante por su historia y sus personajes, al punto de que me animó muchísimo a leer el libro de Stephen King.
Aunque tiene elementos que recuerdan al género slasher, siento que va mucho más allá y se enfoca en un terror psicológico con tonos bastante sombríos. Me encantaron las actuaciones, la historia, la ambientación y la fotografía. Mi única espinita fue que me hubiese gustado ver un poco más en pantalla al personaje de Dick Hallorann, pero a pesar de eso, la película se disfruta muchísimo de principio a fin.
In conclusion, I thought The Shining was an excellent movie. With Halloween just around the corner, I find it a really interesting choice because of its story and characters so much so that it really inspired me to read Stephen King’s book.
Although it has elements reminiscent of the slasher genre, I feel it goes far beyond that and focuses on psychological horror with quite somber undertones. I loved the performances, the story, the setting, and the cinematography. My only minor gripe was that I would have liked to see a little more of Dick Hallorann’s character on screen, but despite that, the movie is a real treat from start to finish.
Mi siguiente paso será leerme el libro para poder comparar ambas versiones y ver si es una buena adaptación fiel o si es una obra que destaca mejor de forma independiente.
