Walking in Sabas Nieves

IMG_20260927_120733.jpg

Although my spirits haven’t been at their best, I’ve kept moving forward regardless... Always in good company, mind you, it seems to be a great way to keep from sinking into negative thoughts. Connecting with nature always helps us break free from the daily routine, and some places hold more power than others, like the one I’ll be sharing in today’s post. It’s a hiking trail that begins in the Chacao Municipality of Greater Caracas, the Sabas Nieves route, which I only visit a few times a year, yet it never fails to leave me with a sense of satisfaction.

I was accompanied by my wife and a good friend of ours, the same friend who, along with her husband, joined us throughout our experience exploring Rome last year. She’s feeling very inspired and is just getting into hiking, so it’s great to head up with her and get swept up in the enthusiasm of someone experiencing it for the first time, unlike someone like me, who’s become a bit worn-out and dreary! 🤣 I’ve always considered the Sabas Nieves trail to be one of the most demanding routes on El Ávila, though perhaps not the most daunting, largely due to the sheer number of rocks along the path, which leaves your knees with very little chance to recover between one step and the next.

There are two things I love about this hiking trail. The first is the chance to see sights and places that differ from those on the routes I usually take in the city center. The panoramic views look out over eastern Caracas; while I can’t make out any recognizable landmarks in the distance, I really enjoy observing the architecture of the nearby buildings. The destination point also offers one of the best spots to rest and recover before the descent. It’s similar to the "Cruz del Ávila" in the city center, but with more space to accommodate a larger number of people. There is shade, flowers, and plenty of rocks and branches where one can sit and have a snack, and for the more hardcore, there’s even a gym up there to supplement their training.

On the other hand, one of the things I don’t particularly like about the Sabas Nieves route is the intensity of the sun beating down on those of us hiking up. Unlike other spots on the mountain, there is almost no shade during the ascent; for the most part, you’re completely exposed. The ground, which has a distinct, almost orange hue, is everywhere, unlike in other areas where you might find concrete or grass; perhaps that’s why I don’t hike this trail as often. It’s not that I’m complaining about the difficulty, in fact, I love that it’s a challenging route, but heading there means committing to a day full of adrenaline, where you’re ready to give 100% of yourself. Even so, I consider it one of the safest trails in the entire Ávila; park rangers are always present, and access is strictly monitored, both for safety and in terms of operating hours.

In conclusion, this trip to the mountains felt like an extra boost to keep going, even if the excitement is short-lived because you’re soon confronted with reality again. Yet, precisely when we’re feeling overwhelmed, activities like this offer a much-needed breather. For me, this day was pure bliss, and the rest of the afternoon turned out to be quite good as well. My recommendation is to head up early in the morning or later in the afternoon, around 4:00 PM, once the sun has dipped, since this route on El Ávila closes at 6:00 PM. Unlike the trails in the city center, where there’s no oversight, you can’t hike here at night. Thanks to everyone for reading; sending you all a sincere hug! 🙏
