Walking through this area of the capital’s Vedado is to wander a rather busy and dynamic piece of the city. From this street that borders the mouth of the Almendares River, 11th Street, we can look directly at the sea, and at the Almendares River in its mouth after its long journey through the capital. Just after crossing the Iron Bridge, a narrow passage where one feels the metallic echo of the cars, we see very close the unmistakable silhouette of the Cuban Art Factory (FAC), which dominates the landscape with its large brick chimney, a reminder of the old food factory it once was.
Today this space has been transformed into one of the most important cultural centers in the country, where the best of Cuban contemporary art gathers and new musical talents are presented. Every corner of the FAC breathes creativity and turns the street into a meeting point between tradition and modernity.
A few steps away is also the wide building that today houses the Cultural Goods Fund, where large craft fairs are held, and at this moment it hosts part of the Book Fair, another space that keeps stories of transformation since it was first a tram terminal, then a bicycle factory, and now a place dedicated to the promotion of art and culture.
However, in the midst of so much cultural and architectural richness, there is a reality that is impossible not to notice, and that is already impossible to avoid appearing in some images: the solid waste that accumulates in the corners of the avenues. It is a serious problem the city faces, aggravated by the energy and fuel crisis that makes garbage collection difficult. Even so, the beauty of the surroundings persists, and every walk along this street is a reminder of how the best of Havana continues to be its contrasts, the art, the memory, the architecture and the nature, together with every moment of the present.

Caminar por esta zona del Vedado capitalino es recorrer un pedazo bastante transitado y dinámico de la ciudad. Desde esta calle que bordea la desembocadura del río Almendares, calle 11na, podemos ver directo al mar, y al rio Almendares en su desembocadura después de su largo recorrido por la capital. Justo después de atravesar el Puente de Hierro, un paso estrecho donde se siente el eco metálico de los autos, vemos muy cercana, la silueta inconfundible de la Fábrica de Arte Cubano (FAC) que domina el paisaje con su gran chimenea de ladrillos, recuerdo de la antigua fábrica de alimentos que fue.
Hoy este espacio se ha transformado en uno de los centros culturales más importantes del país, donde se reúne lo mejor del arte contemporáneo cubano y se presentan los nuevos talentos de la música. Cada rincón de la FAC respira creatividad y convierte la calle en un punto de encuentro entre tradición y modernidad.
A pocos pasos también se encuentra la amplia edificación que hoy es sede del Fondo de Bienes Culturales, donde se realizan grandes ferias de artesania, y en este momento donde acoge una parte de la Feria del Libro, otro espacio que guarda historias de transformación ya que primero fue terminal de tranvías, luego fábrica de bicicletas, y ahora un lugar dedicado a la promoción del arte y la cultura.
Sin embargo, en medio de tanta riqueza cultural y arquitectónica, hay una realidad que no es imposible dejar de notar, y que ya es imposible evitar que salga en algunas imagenes y son los desechos sólidos que se acumulan en las esquinas de las avenidas. Es un problema serio que enfrenta la ciudad, agravado por la crisis energética y de combustible que dificulta la recogida de basura. Aun así la belleza del entorno persiste, y cada paseo por esta calle es un recordatorio de cómo lo mejor de la Habana sigue siendo sus contrastes, el arte, la memoria, la arquitectura y la naturaleza, junto a cada momento del presente.
