I've been avoiding learning to knit hats because at some point to make a nice round shape you have to use double pointed needles (DPNs). It's possible to just knit a tube then cinch it all together at the top but it's a bit awkward in my opinion and leaves too much fabric.
For my first hats I decided to use a free pattern called The Breakwater Beanie by The Purling Pigeon
It comes in three sizes which are teen. small adult and large adult. I measured my head and it's 21 inches so I chose the small adult size which is exactly that. Most commercial hats seem a little large on me so I casted on a few less stitches to compensate but unfortunately it still turned out too big (see the grey hat).
I didn't do a gauge swatch so that's probably on me :)
I decided to make another one and went my own way but still using the pattern as a base.
Instead of the recommended 4mm needles I used 5 mm but casted on 88 stitches which is less than even the teen size and the end result was a great fit!
It's meant to have a lot of ribbing length that way when you fold it you have a double thick layer over your ears, you can see it here unfolded:

Bonus fall colors, this September and October have seemed colder than usual but with some very beautiful days, have been needing to wear hats already 0_0
