Knitting WIP: first top down raglan sweater in progress

image3A9071_Glitch.jpg

I've been knitting my first top down raglan sweater, the pattern is called "the step by step sweater" by Florence Miller and you can find it here: pattern

There is also a corresponding youtube video that walks you through it all so it is very beginner friendly.

I am making size B with 6mm needles instead of 5.5mm based on my swatch

I wanted to try this for a few reasons, I have knitted a few sweaters but they are all seamed, I have never knit top down (this means you start at the collar and increase as you go down). I have also never done raglan increases or german short rows so this seemed like a good learning pattern to make a very classic sweater.

When looking for patterns I always see beautiful sweaters in fun colors that tempt me but if I'm being honest with myself I mostly wear black! I may as well make stuff I will wear a lot.

here is what it looked like just before I divided the stitches for the sleeve and body:

Some detail shots of the raglan increases, these look so satisfying :)

Another great thing about this project is that all the hard parts are at the start, I have already done the german short rows and it was not so hard, the M1R and M1L stitches are always incredibly tight and I am working at the tip of my needle but I managed.

Today I divided the stitches and attached at the underarm for my first proper try on and it fits! I have been trusting the process and my guage swatch math and so far it looks spot on.

Now all I need to do is knit the rest of the body and finish with some ribbing, then pick up each sleeve and do the same, easy peasy :)

I will do another update post on completion :)

Wow, I didn't know you could sew, too—you're good at it.

Thank goodness the hard bit is over, it’ll be much easier from now on. It’s turning out brilliantly!!! I’ve never knitted anything like this before, just simple things. Well done!!💗💗💗

    That looks so cool.

I always thought knitting these things would take longer, like a month or so...

  • Wow, well done! I use to knit every Winter since I was young. A lot of scarves and blankets for family and friends. It's a very relaxing activity for me. ❤️
