Did you know that the ancient Greeks considered amethysts to be a remedy for drunkenness? In other words, they truly believed that this stone prevented people from getting drunk, to the point that they crafted vessels and cups carved from this purple quartz so they could drink wine without suffering its effects. The word "amethyst" literally comes from the Greek Amethystos which means “not drunk.”

Furthermore, in ancient Rome, soldiers used talismans and necklaces depicting the gods Mars or Hercules, carved from sardonyx (a variety of onyx), to give them greater courage in battle.
For their part, ancient Greek and even Roman sailors carried aquamarine with them as an amulet because they believed it came from the treasure chest of the sirens and was capable of warding off storms, keeping the seas calm, and preventing seasickness.

All these stones carry with them hundreds or even thousands of years of incredible stories that seem straight out of a fantasy and mystery book—even the most common ones that you might think are just simple stones are actually fragments of quartz that have traveled for thousands of years, carried by river currents, before finally settling in place.
