So I watch a lot of Slice of Life but I don't really reflect on it. Most of the time, I just shut down my brain and enjoy the show. Sometimes the story gets deeper or funny and I love it, but most of the times, the story is a bit 'meh'. However I will try to make the effort to talk about this show which is a nice show enjoyable but simple.
The story is about a boy and a girl who played in a rural environment since they were young kids. But the girl move to the city and the boy stayed at the village with his sister. Years later, that family moves into the city just to end up in the same school as his long time friend. The first funny but cliche thing is that the boy never though her female friend was a girl. And because of that he was completely confused when the girl do recognize him. So here is where the comedy begins.
I won't go into each episode, however I would like to push some of what the fandom has said about this show:
This show feels natural as it avoid some common cliches or at least don't dwell on them. Things like, would he remember me?
They also celebrate the dynamics between Haruki and Hayano and keep their personalities from kids even though in public they are more formal.
The guy is way more real and less of a simp as opposed to common male role models which are a bit awkward when treating their female friends. (I most say I somewhat agree but not fully).
The manga readers are expecting some of the real drama to come into the story as it moves along as it seems this story touch on some heavy topics later in the story.
I have to say, I'm mostly nodding along with those points, though I wouldn't mind if the male lead traded in his chill maturity for a bit more chaotic, childhood-era goblin energy. Let's be real, actual high school guys are rarely this put-together; a little more authentic teenage goofiness would be hilarious. Sure, the high school awkwardness around girls is relatable, but plenty of dudes are also just completely unbothered and breezy when chatting with girls.
Can't wait for the plot to start creeping into the messy complexities of their lives and watch them stumble through their problems. You know, the good old-fashioned panic of watching how they react to each other's disasters. A mild panic attack already hit with a random love interest showing up gunning for Haruki, which is successfully waking up Hayato's inner jealous beast. This mini love triangle is starting to put them on the school's radar, even if the onlookers are still just serving as confused background NPCs who don't dare interfere yet.
Fast-forward to episode 9, and the plot officially throws us off a cliff into actual heavy-duty family drama lurking in Haruki's private life. Ever since episode 4, it's been obvious her home life isn't quite as sunshine-and-rainbows as Hayato's, so swooping in to rescue her and letting her crash at his place—complete with his little sister, who's basically her certified childhood bestie and biggest fan—is peak cozy drama.
