Harvesting Saba Bananas in Our Garden

Happy Monday Hivers!

There are three varieties of bananas growing in our garden: Saba, Cardava, and Lakatan. However, the Lakatan banana was only planted recently.

This piece of land originally belonged to my mother’s grandmother. When the property was divided among the family, this particular portion was given to one of my mother’s uncle. Since they were living in Mindanao, they eventually sold the land to my sister.

The Saba bananas, however, have been growing here for a long time. They were already planted when my mother’s grandmother was still alive. Saba was actually the only banana variety she wanted to grow because she didn’t like Cardava bananas.

So, among the three varieties in our garden today, Saba is the one that has been part of this garden since my mother’s grandmother’s time, making it a little more special and meaningful to our family.

One of the great things about bananas is that you only need to plant them once. After that, they naturally produce new shoots and continue multiplying on their own. That’s why we already have quite a lot of Saba banana plants growing in our garden.

However, the Super Typhoon Tino last year uprooted many of our banana plants, which delayed our harvest. It took quite some time for the remaining plants to recover and start producing fruit again.

Now that we’ve finally recovered from the effects of the typhoon, we’re able to harvest bananas from our garden again. Unfortunately, the bananas this time are really small!

Still, we’re happy to have a harvest again after such a long wait. It feels good to see our garden slowly coming back to life.

Two days ago, my younger sibling harvested the bananas. While harvesting, our neighbor even laughed because the bunches were really small! But at least they still produced fruit, and we’re happy that we can once again enjoy bananas freshly harvested from our own garden.

Despite the small harvest, it’s still something to be grateful for. After everything our garden went through because of the typhoon, seeing the banana plants produce fruit again is already a small but meaningful blessing. Hopefully, the next harvest will be bigger and better!

Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!

I've been to Mindanao before, in Marilog, Davao City. It's a vast nice place with lots of beautiful spots to visit and I met a lot of nice people.
