LIVING THROUGH EXPECTATIONS

If there is something I stopped doing a long time ago, it is living my life on other people’s terms. This is not something that is very easy to do you know, especially when people look at you awkwardly or think you are stupid for choosing to do what you want to do. Where was it officially written or who made it a law that travelling overseas is an achievement or having a PHD degree is an achievement. A lot of the things we count as achievements are really dumb if we look at it. I know a lot of people who struggle to travel overseas, some even sold everything they had just so they can travel only to reach there and discover it ain’t easy starting over no matter where you are. I know a lot of broke ass PHD degree holders and even some who work for people with no degree at all. The revelation of this made me rethink everything I thought I knew about life.

When you are still at home at a certain age instead of being in school people begin to talk, and it really annoys me, especially when they begin to look at you as a failure. Who said that those who got married at 25 are better than those who got married at 40. Who said those who have children are better than those who do not. I am not saying that marriage or children are bad, in fact it is something I want to have myself. But then again when does getting married or having children become a criteria for success? I see how a lot of people put so much importance to these things that it begins to even affect their health when they can not achieve them. If I want to be a father I can be a father to a child, I can give a child my name and that child would carry it for generations so why put so much importance to things that are not as important. Why continue crying for your own child when there are millions of children without parents (babies included)

Why struggle to live in a country where they will always see you as a foreigner instead of putting in that energy into making it in your own country and making the world recognize you from there. I am not saying that it is bad to want these things, I am saying that those who were privileged to have them are no different from those who are not and it should not be seen as a societal standard or something worth achieving at the risk of more important things. Life is more than the things we fight for or hope to achieve, and for those who die in the process of achieving them, well, the world just continues to move without them. This is the cruelty of life, those who mock you for not being married would not be there with you if you end up with a beast, those who look down on you for not travelling will still laugh if you are unable to succeed there, so why bother impressing or living for them.

Everyone should just do what works for them and makes them happy, leave out putting unnecessary pressure on others, what makes you fulfilled and happy might not be what makes me happy. Nice read.
