SOCIETAL EXPECTATIONS

Society does expect a lot of people and if I am being honest some of these expectations are unrealistic. I mean who says a woman must marry at a certain age or must have a child at a certain time to be able to be seen as a woman. I usually ask where were these written, who made such a law, and why are people blindly following it. Who gets to define the strength of a woman, who gets to say a woman isn’t a woman because of certain things she’s doing or not doing. The fact still remains that people need to stop living their lives based on what others think life should be.

I was speaking with a friend some time ago who was always comparing herself with others, especially when she sees her friends and former classmates post nice things online. She feels she is supposed to be married and doing well like her friends and I asked her a simple question. What makes you think they are doing well? Obviously it was the nice pictures or the places they took the pictures, but the fact remained that she was living her life based on the unrealistic way she thought life was supposed to be and putting unnecessary pressure on herself. Lately I got to understand that no one really cares how you live your life so long it’s not affecting them.

No one really expects you to be strong so long it doesn’t affect them in any way. Perhaps only very few of your loved ones care how you live even if it doesn’t affect them one bit. But 98% don’t really care, they only care about how your lie makes them look to others and thus try to be involved in it. If they had another choice, they would care less and allow you to do whatever you want. At the end of the day, those who say you are not strong enough or not intelligent enough or not even enough for whatever reason are the ones who truly mount the pressure on you and try to make you look weak. When you get to a certain age and level you get to realize that no one truly cares if you gave birth out of wedlock, or finished high school or college, or are as successful as you think you are not. The main people that mount these pressures are those who it affects directly and they try to use society (which doesn’t exist) to make you look weak or bad.

Society puts so much pressure on women about marriage and having kids. When a girl is born, the whole family kind of decides at what age she gonna marry and have kids. Unfortunately, in some countries, this is normal, and women don't have any say in it. When I was born, my grandma planned for my marriage and future, and obviously I never followed that path and became isolated. I find these two factors to be societal pressure on women. About kids, due to scientific or medical reasons, people talk about it, but I never believed that you should get married at a certain age...
