An Emotional Roller Coaster: Review of the Best Episode of Ted Lasso This Season

The best episode of Ted Lasso so far this season has, without a doubt, been Episode 9, which premiered just a few hours ago.

The following review contains spoilers for Season 4 of Ted Lasso.

I have to start by saying that this season of Ted Lasso has felt as if the show had never gone away. However, while the episodes have delivered on their promises, I have to admit that some of them felt a bit lackluster compared to what I expect from this series.

But all that has changed with Episode 9 of this fourth season, as it has been a true roller coaster of emotions that has left more than a few people on the verge of tears—myself included.

The episode begins with Gemma trying to force her return to the court after her injury, but the coaches decide she won’t play until she’s medically cleared—even though she’s the team’s best scorer and star player. The team is going through a rough patch without its top scorer, so the coaches are considering alternatives and new formations that will help the girls get into the opponent’s box more often and create more scoring opportunities. As a result, the press begins to question Ted about the team’s current form and how he plans to turn things around.

Later, during practice, Coach Alice—who has clearly matured and grown as a person throughout the season—encourages Shannon, whom she had been very hard on and strict with during training because Alice believed Shannon wasn’t ready and that it was better to leave her off the team. Alice gives the girl advice, and Shannon listens attentively to her coach.

Aside from that, there’s the drama involving Keeley and Roy. Keeley starts experiencing dizziness and fainting spells, which worries her a bit, but she eventually realizes she’s pregnant. Naturally, Keeley tells Rebecca, who couldn’t be happier for her best friend.

Back with the team, Ted invites Mae to travel with the whole team on the official bus, since the girls have a crucial match coming up that will determine whether they’ll move up to the top division of English women’s soccer. Mae accepts and encourages the girls, telling them that she could never have been a soccer player because she didn’t have the talent for it, but that they can achieve their goals of becoming professional soccer players. Mae urges the girls to give it their all and win the game.

However, the game gets off to a rough start for the girls; without their star player, they lose a lot of offensive firepower. To make matters worse, the opposing team scores the first goal of the match; a series of lapses in concentration and defensive errors allow Bristol to score the second goal, and so the first half seemed set to end with the Richmond FC women’s team trailing 2–0.

However, the coaches decided to bring Gemma in before the end of the first half, knowing that her mere presence could turn the game around and recognizing her talent—even though she wasn’t at 100%. Gemma is a game-changer; on her very first play, she wins the ball and is fouled in the opponent’s penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick for Richmond. And who else but star player Gemma to take and score the penalty? She converts it, and the team heads into halftime trailing 2–1—but feeling confident they can still win the match.

As a precaution—since she had been on the receiving end of a hard foul and the team didn’t want to risk her health—they decided it wasn’t worth exposing Gemma to a more serious injury and opted to bring Shannon in to replace her. Once again, Alice cheered on Shannon, whom she had seen doing extra training sessions to improve even further—and that undoubtedly paid off.

In the second half, Richmond scored the equalizer following a great team play by the Harrison twins. But it couldn’t end like that. In stoppage time, following another great play by the twins, a loose ball was left in the box. Team captain Lizzie Davis picked up the ball that had been fumbled by the goalkeeper and put Richmond ahead 3–2. The visiting fans were beside themselves with excitement, as they were on the verge of pulling off a stunning upset. But it couldn’t end like that.

With very little time left on the clock, Bristol did everything possible to send a ball into the box, and after a header by the forward, the Richmond goalkeeper made a legendary save. Even with the score in their favor, Quinn looked for her forward—who else could it be? None other than the one who had been underestimated, the one few had faith in. Shannon won the 50-50 ball, shook off a defender, and then lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper to further extend Richmond’s lead. At that moment, Richmond had secured the match—there was no way they could lose it now. Shannon was emerging as a heroine, and not all heroes wear capes. A decisive 4-2 victory for Richmond and promotion to the Super League. Richmond fans couldn’t contain their excitement.

But sadly, it couldn’t end there.

While the locker room was filled with jubilation, joy, and celebration, Rebecca had been informed of an incident. And that’s how Ted Lasso delivers one of this season’s most moving scenes—without saying a single word, relying solely on Ted and Rebecca’s facial expressions. Apparently, Mae, the adorable elderly bar owner, had suffered some kind of accident in the excitement of seeing Richmond promoted to the top division. Mae, who had traveled, cheered, and remained loyal to Richmond her entire life.

The truth is, it’s a powerful scene—as I said before, it’s an emotional roller coaster. After the girls’ incredible achievement, seeing the endearing Mae brings tears to even the toughest of eyes.
