[Anime] Luck favors those who seek it. Review of Episode 4 of Overgeared

I think a dream that many young people of this generation have is to be able to make a living playing video games; I think many dream of making enough money playing Minecraft, but imagine the conversation you’d have to have with your parents to tell them you’re going to make a career out of playing video games. I can’t imagine that would be easy.

Now, Grid finds himself in that situation—he’s clearly making some money with his in-game skills, and he could make a lot more if he dedicated much more time to playing. So he has to make a decision about what he wants to do. We’ve already seen that his family—and especially his dad—doesn’t support him or even tolerate the idea. It’s interesting what this episode shows us: when you have a dream and you’re good at it but you’re just starting out, not many people will support you, and few will offer words to motivate you to keep going. Because, to be fair, it’s one thing to believe you have a talent for video games and quite another to actually make a living from playing—the bills don’t pay themselves.

In this episode, we see that Grid has devoted much more time to his work as a blacksmith—after all, he is Pagma’s successor. We see that many players come to buy his tools because they know the quality of his work; however, Grid knows he can do better. On top of that, after a month of forging items, he was only able to craft a handful of items of great market value, so he feels somewhat disappointed by his bad luck. I find it somewhat striking that Grid, despite having legendary-level skills, can’t craft high-value items as he’d like due to his low level. Some say it’s just a matter of luck.

IMDB

Since we know Grid has money problems and is toying with the idea of becoming a millionaire in real life, he decides to go to an auction with the intention of selling the “epic”-level items he has forged. He knows that at an auction, he could make more money if someone takes an interest in his creations. And to tell the truth, the auction opens the door to new quests and a new opportunity to earn the money he so desperately craves. Grid manages to put his epic items up for auction, but on top of that—and thanks to the fame he’s already gained—the auction house manager takes an interest in his items and even commissions him to forge a legendary-level sword. For someone who doesn’t have the skill to forge items at will, this quest would have been impossible, but Grid doesn’t give up without first trying.

After putting a lot of effort into trying to forge items of legendary rank or higher, Grid completes the quest; however, it wasn’t easy, nor did he succeed on the first try—Grid had to work all week to complete the quest. He doesn’t have the script on his side—at least not without putting in the effort. After delivering the items to the people who had commissioned them, Grid makes the money he’d been dreaming of—in fact, he makes more than he ever expected; he becomes a millionaire. Everything he’d been dreaming of and working toward comes true.

Luck and trust in family are the themes of this episode. Grid’s family doesn’t trust him until they see the results of his efforts. At first, Grid had no luck with his items, but all that changes when he works hard and puts in the effort.

Rating: 92/100

I think Grid is actually lucky, both in game and in real life: he's got legendary class by pure luck, despite (or because of) his shortcomings as a person (shouldn't he be named Greed instead?), and in real world he has a family that is willing to put up with a gamer addict bum. What you've described was all in episode 5 though ;o)
