Today, while I was out shopping, I overheard two girls talking in a fairly loud but friendly tone. One said to the other, “You’re really cheerful today. Who made you smile like that?” I didn’t want to eavesdrop on their conversation, but I found the question amusing, and it kept lingering in my mind. What made you smile today?
I think what makes us smile doesn’t have to be extraordinary—in fact, quite the opposite. The simple fact that we’re alive, that we’re here, and that we’re breathing—that alone would be reason enough to smile and be grateful. I believe that living in the moment, being fully present, is a valid reason to smile at life.
When we smile, we feel good; our mood changes; we look at life with more optimism—and believe me, that’s key. Being grateful and smiling can bring good things into our lives, because I think it’s much better than walking around with a long face. I don’t think it’s an act of manifestation—far from it—but I do believe that good things happen to us when we’re open to them.
As I said, it doesn’t have to be anything spectacular—you don’t have to receive extraordinary news or experience a moment straight out of a teen movie. I think simple moments, like a text message, a “good morning,” or a message that shows we’re valued by others, can make us smile. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be that—just knowing that we’re unique, that there’s never been and never will be anyone exactly like us, is reason enough to smile and be grateful. Don’t you agree?
For example, in my case, hearing an unexpected conversation made me smile today. But it could have been listening to my favorite song, seeing an old friend, coming across a meme online, talking to my brother, or even playing with my little niece—any of those things can make me smile. Another simple thing that makes me smile is having a cup of coffee in the morning. I bought a really pretty mug with a rather unique design that makes me smile every time I drink from it. I think it was a smart purchase—a mug that reminds me to smile more often.
I think it’s fair to say that part of growing as people is knowing how to identify what makes us happy and working on it; part of growing is paying attention to what we have right now and stopping worrying about what might come in the future.
Obviously, I don’t mean to say that we should stop paying attention to important things or to things that might frustrate us, nor am I saying we should ignore them. I think we’ve all had frustrating days when we can’t see things clearly, or some of us may even have had a few dark weeks when we couldn’t find a reason to smile.
And that’s where I think we develop our best sense of humor—on those gray and dark days, as odd or strange as that may sound. When we’re able to laugh and smile when something goes wrong, when we understand that not everything has to be perfect, that’s when I believe we grow and mature, even if just a little.
With nothing more to add today, I’d like to ask you: What made you smile today? I’d genuinely like to know.

Genuinamente me gustaría saber.
