3 Idiots is a 2009 Indian Hindi comedy-drama directed by Rajkumar Hirani and written by Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, with the story also credited to Abhijat Joshi and the film loosely based on Chetan Bhagat's novel Five Point Someone.
The movie stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, and Boman Irani. It follows three engineering students whose friendship and different views on education challenge the pressure and competition around them.
My Take
It was a 2009 movie, but people still talk about it. It was funny and emotional, and it also had a lot to say about education, family pressure, and how people decide what success should look like.
What I liked most was how easily the movie moved between comedy and serious moments. One scene could make me laugh, and the next one could suddenly make me think about something much more serious. It did not feel like the movie was trying too hard to teach a lesson. Most of the messages came naturally through the characters and their experiences.
The friendship between Rancho, Farhan, and Raju was my favorite part. They had very different personalities, but their friendship felt believable. Their conversations, arguments, and silly moments made the college sections really enjoyable to watch.
Aamir Khan was really good as Rancho. He brought a lot of energy to the character, but what I liked more was the way Rancho looked at things differently from everyone around him.
Madhavan and Sharman Joshi also worked really well alongside him, and the three of them made the friendship feel complete.
Boman Irani was another highlight for me. His character was much stricter and more serious, but he was also one of the main reasons many scenes worked so well. His timing, expressions, and way of speaking made even some of the tense scenes entertaining.
What made the movie stay with me was that its message was not simply "study less" or "don't care about grades". It was more about understanding what you actually want from life instead of blindly following someone else's idea of success.
Outstanding Performance
The chemistry between Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi was one of the strongest parts of the movie. Their friendship had plenty of comedy, but there was also a real emotional connection between the three characters.
Aamir Khan gave Rancho a very different personality from the typical serious college student. He was curious, confident, and sometimes completely unpredictable. His way of questioning things created many of the movie's funniest and most memorable moments.
Madhavan did a great job as Farhan because his character felt quieter and more confused compared to Rancho. His performance worked especially well in the more emotional parts, where Farhan had to deal with the expectations placed on him.
Sharman Joshi's Raju brought another kind of emotion to the group. His character carried a lot of fear and pressure, and Sharman made those feelings easy to understand without making the character feel overly dramatic.
Then there was Boman Irani as Virus. His strict attitude toward education made him a perfect contrast to Rancho. Some of his scenes were genuinely funny just because of how seriously he took everything.
The movie also had plenty of memorable comedy outside the main trio. Chatur, played by Omi Vaidya, was especially entertaining. His pronunciation and overconfident attitude gave the movie some of its funniest moments.
Casts & Characters
Ranchhoddas "Rancho" Chanchad was played by Aamir Khan.
Rancho was the most free-minded of the three friends and believed that understanding something was more important than simply memorizing it. He constantly questioned the way his college operated and encouraged Farhan and Raju to think differently.
Farhan Qureshi was played by R. Madhavan.
Farhan was studying engineering mainly because that was what his father wanted for him. His real passion was photography, but he was afraid to follow it because of his family's expectations. With Rancho's encouragement, Farhan eventually decided to choose the career he actually wanted.
Raju Rastogi was played by Sharman Joshi.
Raju was extremely worried about his family's financial situation and felt that getting a good job was his only way to improve their lives. The pressure became so strong that it affected him badly during college. His friendship with Rancho and Farhan eventually helped him become more confident and make decisions for himself.
Pia Sahastrabuddhe was played by Kareena Kapoor.
Pia was Virus's daughter and a medical student. She was more understanding and open-minded than her father and became close to Rancho. She also played an important role when her family faced a difficult situation.
Viru Sahastrabuddhe was played by Boman Irani.
Viru, known as "Virus", was the strict director of the engineering college. He believed strongly in discipline, competition, and academic performance. His approach often put enormous pressure on the students, especially Rancho, who constantly challenged his way of thinking.
Chatur Ramalingam was played by Omi Vaidya.
Chatur was one of the students who cared heavily about grades and competition. He was extremely confident in his academic abilities and often treated Rancho as a rival. His famous speech and the way he mispronounced words became some of the most memorable comedy in the movie.
Conclusion
3 Idiots was one of those movies that managed to be funny without losing its emotional side. I liked how it talked about education, friendship, family expectations, and finding your own path without turning the whole movie into a lecture.
The comedy still works, the friendships feel memorable, and many of the messages remain relevant even years after its release. For me, it was the kind of movie that could make me laugh in one moment and think about my own choices in the next. And I'm waiting for the next installment that I got some news about. I'm hoping they'll be back.
