🇬🇧 English

The insect in the image is a blue-green shield bug or striped-belly stink bug belonging to the genus Edessa (most likely Edessa rufomarginata or a related species). It is a hemipteran belonging to the family Pentatomidae.

A while ago, I shared a very nice one in this Hive community that was blue underneath; this one is orange.

It is characterized by its bright blue-green back, orange or reddish antennae and legs, and a yellow or orange ventral abdomen with marked dark transverse stripes. It is perched on an eggplant leaf (Solanum melongena), one of the common host plants for solanaceous species. It causes damage when there is a high population.

The Fascinating (and Curious) Blue-Green Shield Bug with Orange

If you have ever walked through an orchard or a tropical garden, you have likely encountered this striking little visitor. With its medieval shield shape and an almost perfect contrast of colors — vibrant blue-green on its back and glittering orange tones on its legs and antennae — this insect belongs to the genus Edessa, within the Pentatomidae family.

Although at first glance it stands out for its beautiful design, looking at it from below reveals its most peculiar trait: an orange belly decorated with perfectly defined black stripes. This bright coloration in nature is not just a whim of evolution. It is a visual warning (aposematism) for predators, announcing that eating this bug might not be the best idea. It releases a strong smell; here we call it "peorro".

As with most stink bugs or shield bugs, these insects possess glands capable of releasing a liquid substance with a strong, pungent odor if they feel threatened or are handled. It is their primary defense mechanism to keep birds and other predators away.

In terms of diet, they are phytophagous insects. They use a stylet-shaped mouthpart (a sucking beak) to pierce the soft tissues of young stems, leaves, and fruits to absorb sap and nutrients. They have a strong preference for plants of the Solanaceae family, such as tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. In small numbers, they are simply part of the garden ecosystem's rich biodiversity; however, if their populations increase significantly, they can become a pest for local crops by damaging the appearance and vitality of the fruits.

The next time you find one of these tiny green shields on your plants, take a moment to admire its incredible details, but make sure to handle it gently if you don't want to experience its peculiar defensive aroma!
