Seriously, sometimes I sit and wonder if we have ever really paid attention to the way we treat people when they have nothing.
Look at how people behave around someone who has money. Everybody wants to be close. People answer their calls. They want to sit with them, hang out with them, invite them to places, and sometimes even treat their opinions like they are the most important opinions in the room. But let that person's situation change.
Let the money finish. Let the business fail. Let them lose their job. Let them go through a difficult season where they can't afford the things they used to afford.
You will be surprised at how quickly some people disappear.
The same person who used to be surrounded by friends can suddenly find themselves eating alone, struggling alone and dealing with their problems alone.
And honestly, I think this is something we don't talk about enough when we talk about depression.
Yes, financial problems can cause stress. Anybody who has ever had bills piling up while there is almost nothing in the bank understands that kind of pressure. But sometimes, it isn't even the lack of money that hurts the most, It is the way people start treating you because you don't have money.
You start noticing the change, People don't call as often, You stop getting invitations, Some people talk to you differently. Some won't even ask how you are doing because they already assume you have nothing to offer them.
And slowly, you begin to feel like you don't matter. That feeling can mess with a person's mind.
Imagine someone who was once confident and full of dreams suddenly feeling ashamed because they cannot afford the things everyone around them seems to afford.
Imagine wanting to go out with your friends but knowing you can't spend anything, so you start avoiding them. Imagine having a problem and being afraid to tell anyone because you don't want them to see you as a burden. Imagine smiling and saying "I'm fine" every day because you don't even know who you can honestly talk to.
This is why I believe we need to be more careful with people. Not everyone who is broke is lazy, not everyone who is struggling made bad choices. Sometimes life just happens.
A business can fail. A job can disappear. A family emergency can take everything you have saved. One bad season can put someone in a position they never imagined they would be in.
And please, don't forget that the person struggling today could be the person helping you tomorrow. Money should never be the reason we decide whether someone deserves respect.
If someone cannot afford to buy you lunch, they are still your friend. If someone cannot contribute money to an outing, they are still a human being. If someone is going through a difficult season, they don't need you to remind them that they are struggling. They probably already know.
Sometimes, just check on them, talk to them, invite them anyway. Let them know they are still part of the circle, even if they can't spend a dime. We really don't know what people are carrying inside.
That person who always laughs might be fighting a battle nobody knows about. That person who stopped coming around might not be proud of their situation. That person who looks distant might simply be tired of feeling like they don't belong.
Let's learn to treat people well when they have nothing to give us.Because money can change people's lives, but it should never determine their worth. Be kind to people, ot because of what they have, but because they are human.
Thank for checking on my post and have a wonderful day
