Fledgling: Part 145

Hi all

It has been a tough two weeks, but I am back with some writing for you. Keep in mind, if you are squimish, you may want to skip the next few updates, as it involves resetting a leg. The shaman opted to have only the King’s men in the room with her. She didn’t want Kay to associate what was about to happen to her with those she would have to continue living with. But Silens wouldn’t leave. She had to see this to the end. She had made a promise to Saita, and she was going to see it through to the end. Even if that meant destroying the relationship she had built with Kay.

As the men started tying linen over Kay, she started softly begging them to stop, cycling through more languages than Silens knew. The speech was slurred, but the feeling behind it was evident. She was scared, knowing that more pain was coming.

The king straddled the left thigh, and Silens sent a silent prayer into the universe as she removed the stone flints she would be using. She placed them into the antiseptic wash and rinsed her hands. There was no point in introducing more infection at this point.

She steeled herself as she lifted the sharpened stone from the liquid and pressed it against the edges of the bone. The grey sections crumbled away as if chalk. Kay strained against her bonds, moaning, but Silens knew this pain was nothing compared to what was to come. She only prayed that she found living bone soon, not wanting to risk one leg being significantly shorter than the other.

She worked diligently for an hour, making sure she took frequent breaks to clean her tools and hands. Finally, after what felt like days, the bone crumbled less, and it felt like the stone was scraping along metal. Kay’s body arched, and a guttural grunt escaped her lips.

She instructed Venator to put a leather strap between Kay’s teeth. She was worried that Kay would bite down on herself or someone else if they didn’t. The hunter hadn’t wanted to; he had become emotionally invested, but at least Kay couldn’t see who was holding the strap in place.

Silens carefully made sure no more bone was crumbly, much to the dismay of Kay, who was staring at her in wide-eyed agony. Small spots of blood were surfacing on the bone, and there was no more smell of decay. Silens was sure that all the bad bone was gone, and it was time to kill off any lingering bacteria.

She asked a huntsman to heat the small knife in the fire until it was red-hot. The hunter had done so and brought it to the shaman, who applied it directly to the exposed living bone. Kay’s reaction was immediate and violent. Despite the leather strap in her mouth and her restraints, she convulsed and screamed. Energy claws shredded into the bed, and her teeth sank deep into the leather as she continued to scream through clenched teeth.

The scream lasted a long time, and she even took a shaky breath before uttering another one as the super-heated blade was kept in place. Then, she gagged, and Venator had to remove the strap and turn her head, allowing her to vomit what little liquid they had managed to give her earlier.

“Please! I’ll end myself if you hate me so much. Just please stop hurting me!” she begged in pain.

Everyone in the room understood that, and Silens broke. She didn’t think that Kay was conscious enough to say anything close to what she had. She removed the knife and instructed a hunter to pour a cooling wash that she had set aside earlier over the area. She came to kneel on Kay’s left side and gently took her head in her hands, while lowering her forehead to Kay’s. She felt the heat, felt the sweat, and smelled the fear.

“We are almost done, Kay. I need to splint your leg next. Stop fighting what I have to do.” She said softly. “The pain will get better, and he will disappear into your memories once more.”

“No…” moaned Kay, squeezing her eye closed. “Let me go.”

Silens wasn’t going to get through to her in this state. She placed her hands on either side of Kay’s neck and felt the rapid but shallow heart rate. She knew that she needed to be worried about shock, but she wasn’t sure that Kay’s mind was going to last much longer if they waited for her to recover.

“I’m sorry, but no. It’ll be over soon.” Silens released her.

“Please!”

Silens took a deep breath and started gathering what she needed next. The splints, padding, and bandages. The quicker they got the bone realigned, the better. Kay saw the items and started to struggle, shouting in panic and trying to move.

“Dad, I’m sorry!” she sobbed. “I’ll be good!” Despite everything Kay has done, you can't help but feel a little bad for what she is going through.
