Should We Teach Our Children To Fight Back When Bullied?

No doubt, bullying is something a lot of children face especially in the school. Since we're in the era of social media, I have also read about cases of bullying, some are very extreme to the extent of injuring another student. But, the big question is; should our children be taught to fight back bullies? Or should they just walk away in silence? Remember, bullying is not only done physically, it can also be done verbally.

While some parents ask their children to hit back, I do not subscribe to that. I think children shouldn't be taught to retaliate because of how their mind are wired; too fragile to assimilate informations without knowing why.In as much as we want our children to always stand up for their selves, teaching them that every problem should be solve with violence is wrong too. If they're taught to fight back, it may create another problem too.

There are some actions they can take to put the bullies in their place, of course you know that, bullies thrive in fear and silence. They believe that you can never stand up for yourself.

Firstly, you can tell your child to stay calm, keep their voices normal and relax their body. Secondly, Children can be taught to speak up with clarity;I always tell my child to look whoever that's bullying her to look the bully in the eyes and say "That's not okay" or "stop". And if they don't stop? Thirdly, walk away immediately and don't fight back.

Most importantly, encourage them to always report the bullies to their teachers, or any higher authority in the school. And when they get home, they shouldn't stay silent too.

POV: While we're making efforts to teach our children not to fight back, I believe parents should also tame their children who are bullies too. They should also be taught not to hit first.perhaps, this can make them become a better adult.

Thanks for stopping by!

Nice post, this is something I think about a lot as a mom. I try to teach my kids to be diplomatic and to solve their problems with words first, and to tell an adult when something is wrong. That is for the mild stuff. But if one of my kids is in real danger, like a few kids hitting them, or they are put in a really disturbing situation, then it is okay for them to fight back. I teach them which battles to pick and which to let go, because I truly believe one single moment can change a child's life forever.
