Mi madre es costurera desde muy joven, y aunque en sus inicios lo hacía para ajustar su ropa y hacerse pequeñas piezas con retazos de tela, luego de anotarse en un curso de corte y costura, fue su manera de generar ingresos estando en casa.
Nunca fue un emprendimiento formal, pero siempre tuvo buenas recomendaciones y entre sus clientas se corría la voz, por lo que siempre tenía algo para hacer, aunque su punto débil siempre fue no calcular sus ganancias, por lo que casi siempre, terminaba cobrando muy poco por sus servicios.
Con los años, se dedicó solo a los arreglos, dejando para ella (y para mis hijos que son sus únicos nietos) la confección de ropa casual. Con eso, no solo se entretenía, sino que hacía un ingreso adicional a las pensiones por vejez que devengaba.
Cuando emigró, conoció a una vecina que tiene un pequeño taller en su casa, con ella se incorporó nuevamente en el arte de la costura, pero en esta oportunidad, haciendo piezas por cantidades para clientes corporativos. Con ella, aprendió a hacer bolsos, banderines, y todo tipo de merch, lo cual implicaba siempre un reto para ella.
Una agencia de viajes, una vez les pidió 100 antifaces para darlos a sus clientes luego de la compra de los boletos o paquetes turísticos. El trabajo de ella y su amiga, era armar los antifaces que ya venían con el logo de la empresa estampado en un costado.
Se repartieron el trabajo de manera que la amiga hacía las costuras iniciales, y mi madre, remataba todos los detalles finales, ya que su amiga no es costurera experta, y fue justo por ese detalle que sucedió lo inesperado. Enviaron el antifaz de muestra al cliente, quien nota que el logotipo impreso quedó invertido, por lo que había que rehacer ¡todas las costuras!
Cuando mamá recibe el paquete con todos los antifaces a medio hacer, y la mala noticia de parte del cliente, tuvo que idear un plan para optimizar el tiempo, así que le pidió a su amiga, a mi hermano y cuñada que fueran descosiendo cada antifaz cuidadosamente para ella ir armando desde cero cada pieza.
Me contaba cuando la llamaba que se le dormían las piernas de tanto estar sentada frente a la máquina, pero que afortunadamente lograron entregar todo a tiempo y recibir el pago en una sola cuota. Pero la mejor noticia vino después, ya que salieron mucho más trabajos para este pequeño emprendimiento, y su amiga decidió dejarle unos por completo a mi madre, de manera que cobraba la totalidad del trabajo, pudiendo así reunir y comprarse su propia máquina, para no tener que quedarse hasta tarde en el taller cuando le tocara terminar un encargo.
Con esta adquisición, muchos de los vecinos le han pedido arreglos pequeños, así que volver a enfrentarse a este tipo de retos le ha servido no solo de forma financiera, sino también para mantener su mente activa, a sus 78 años de edad. Y aunque parezca un poco cruel decir que mi madre trabaja con esa edad, la verdad es que se lo toma como terapia ocupacional, distrayéndose con algo que le gusta hacer y que además le deja dividendos para darse sus gustos de vez en cuando.

Over the years, she focused solely on alterations, reserving the making of casual clothing for herself (and for my children, who are her only grandchildren). This not only kept her entertained but also provided her with additional income on top of the old-age pension she received.
When she moved abroad, she met a neighbor who runs a small workshop out of her home; with her, she returned to the art of sewing, but this time making items in bulk for corporate clients. From her, she learned to make bags, pennants, and all kinds of merchandise—which was always a challenge for her.
A travel agency once asked them for 100 eye masks to give to their customers after they purchased tickets or travel packages. Her and her friend’s job was to assemble the eye masks, which already had the company’s logo printed on one side.
They divided up the work so that her friend did the initial sewing, and my mother finished all the final details, since her friend isn’t an expert seamstress—and it was precisely because of that detail that the unexpected happened. They sent the sample mask to the customer, who noticed that the printed logo was upside down, so they had to redo all the seams!
When Mom received the package with all the half-finished masks and the bad news from the client, she had to come up with a plan to make the most of her time, so she asked her friend, my brother, and my sister-in-law to carefully unpick each mask so she could reassemble each piece from scratch.
She told me when I called that her legs would fall asleep from sitting in front of the machine for so long, but fortunately they managed to deliver everything on time and receive payment in a single installment. But the best news came later, as many more jobs came in for this small business, and her friend decided to leave some of them entirely to my mother, so that she could collect the full payment for the work. This allowed her to save up and buy her own machine, so she wouldn’t have to stay late at the workshop when she had to finish an order.
With this purchase, many of the neighbors have asked her to do small repairs, so tackling these kinds of challenges again has helped her not only financially but also in keeping her mind active at 78 years old. And although it might seem a little cruel to say that my mother works at that age, the truth is that she sees it as a form of occupational therapy, distracting herself with something she enjoys doing—and which also brings in enough money for her to treat herself every now and then.
