One of my concerns as a mother regarding my children’s upbringing and mental health is the amount of time they spend in front of screens when I’m not home because I’m working. So, while looking for options, I came across something I loved, and I’m here to share it with you.

While browsing Instagram, I came across a study that confirms increased cortisol levels in children as a result of a lack of parental attention during the day. And while they do have time for socializing, studying, and recreation while at school, when they get home, most parents choose to give them access to an electronic device instead of spending quality time with their little ones. All of this is reflected in irritable behavior, poor concentration, and high levels of hyperactivity—all resulting from elevated cortisol levels in children.

With all this information in mind, I decided to pay a little more attention to the effect of screens on my children during the few moments of leisure I have while at home, and I came up with the idea of creating a “game wheel” that includes all the activities we can do at home using the games we have or that we can recreate.

So I took a piece of cardstock and drew a circle, which I then divided into 8 sections, to write the name of a game in each space. In fact, my son was thrilled to see that I’d included Battleship—I don’t like playing it because it takes so long—but I also included Tutti Frutti, or “Stop” as we call it in Venezuela, since he always has a hard time filling in all the squares and that’s why he doesn’t like playing it.

Since I couldn’t find the spinner from another game we have, my son came up with the idea of using a spinner to choose which game to play. We both agreed that whatever the blue token pointed to was the game we’d play next—and on this occasion, UNO was selected. So we took out the cards, shuffled them for a while, and played a few hands, and my younger son and I had a fun time.

Now the challenge is to find a way to get my older son involved in that half-hour or so of wholesome fun as well—which, beyond giving his eyes and brain a break from the constant stimulation of screens and the overload of online information, also fosters family time in a much more relaxed atmosphere.

The idea is to use this wheel every day, for at least 45 minutes after school, to minimize the impact of electronic devices on their developing minds. Then, once the habit is established, my plan is to add 15 minutes of physical activity—inside the house—to round out a unique hour spent with my children, which I’m sure will be something they’ll remember well into adulthood.

    Saludos.
