Same Person, Different Treatment: Why Does Respect Depend On What People Can Offer?

You know, I've always liked to pen down my thoughts and all just to free my mind. Today, I witnessed something, and you know, I felt somehow, and I can't just help but wonder how we often treat people differently depending on what they can offer us, I mean, depending on what we can get from them.

And I've come to notice that about humans. I won't want to generalize it though, but then I've noticed that our attitudes tend to change quickly towards someone depending on what the person can offer us. Say, for example, now, someone who was once ignored because he's broke and jobless can suddenly become seen, noticed, and even be important because he's now rich, influential, and well connected.

And just like what I saw today, this guy has been ignored for a long time because he has nothing to offer; most of the people I know always avoid him; they don't even want to talk about him; they just wave off his name and all. Guess what? His circumstances improved, and his life experienced a great turnaround, and now everyone, especially those who knew him back then and ignored him now wants to be associated with him... Why? Because of that, they can get or gain from him.

There's absolutely nothing wrong in building relationships and looking out for people that can help our lives; we are humans and will always need each other's help, but then, there's a difference between appreciating what someone brings into your life and valuing that just because of that thing. What now happens if that person is to go broke? What happens if the person can no longer do what he/she was doing before? What if they lose their job or their influence and you now have nothing to gain from them? Will you still treat them as an important person? Will you still respect them? Will you still maintain that good relationship between you both...?

In short, the way we treat people when we have nothing to get or gain from them says a lot about who we really are. We should always respect everyone no matter their class or position; respect shouldn't be reserved for some set of people. The person we look down on today may be that person you will definitely need tomorrow, and by renz you may not be able to boycott your way to get what you want; you just have to pass through them. But that aside, we really need to do better by treating people nicely.
