I watched a movie recently, though the movie has been out since 2014, but I could not watch the movie, because I feel I already know what is all about, I mean I have read the book and I feel there’s no point in watching the movie, but damn! When I watch the movie, it was way more better than the book, the movie does not look boring like the book does. The title of the movie is “Before I Go To Sleep”. It’s an interesting movie to watch.
Before I Go To Sleep is a Psychological thriller that makes you question everybody on the screen while watching, you’ll look at a character and you’ll be like “Nah, something is not right about this person”. And you can also image waking up every morning and absolutely have no idea who you are, who the man sleeping beside you is, and you can’t even remember what happened to you over the past several year. You can’t tell if the people around you are saying the truth. Honestly, I’ll say the situation is somehow terrifying to even think about.
The movie was stared by Nicole Kidman, known as Christine Lucas in the movie. Christine was suffering from a severe amnesia with a traumatic attack. Every time she goes to sleep, she wakes up in the morning without remembering any previous event. You can imagine the situation where you wake up every single day trying to learn who you are over and over again. Like, that sounds sounds exhausting. The movie did well in showing us how frightening that experience can be.
We also have Colin Firth who played Ben Lucas, he’s the husband to Christine. So whenever she wakes up in the morning, he’s always the one helping her to fill the blank by helping her to understand her own life . Personally, I think Colin Firth did a great Job here, as the movie progresses, you’ll get to understand how exhausting it can be for both of them. The situation of having to explain their marriage to his wife every morning can be somehow tiring, like, It’s really a lot to deal with. It looks like an heavy burden on his shoulder, but he has to keep doing it .
Then there’s Dr. Nash, played by Mark Strong. He’s a psychologist who was secretly helping Christine recover her memories and Ben doesn’t know anything about it. You know, when you realize a doctor is treating your wife without your knowledge, you’ll probably be curious, of course , I too was curious about it while I was watching. Dr. Nash has one kind of unsettling quality that will make you wonder if he’s genuine and really trying to help Christine or maybe there’s something fishy going on. We also have Anne-Marie Duff ( Claire) who was Christine’s friend, You’ll start wondering what exactly does Claire know about Christine’s past. So between these characters, the film gives us some kind of possible suspects to consider.
The movie built its suspense as Christine begins to recover fragments of her memory, and this makes her to question everyone around her, including her husband. Anytime she discovers something new, you’ll start to look at the characters differently and I found myself wanting her to discover the truth with her, because living like that can be exhausting. Imagine not having something to remember, and you don’t even know the real intentions of the people you get information from.
However, I have a few problems with the film. Personally, I feel the movie did not maintain the same level of suspense towards the ending , I was not completely satisfied with it. I started getting an idea of where things might be heading to, Although, I would not say I had everything figured out completely, but some developments felt easier to anticipate than they should have been. And you know when a psychological thriller starts giving you that feeling, it somehow loses little of its impact. You know that kind of feeling when a thriller builds up all this suspense and you’re expecting the ending to completely blow your mind? Nah, I did not have that kind of feeling. Anyway, that does not mean the ending was terrible, some revelations were really interesting.
Overall, Before I Go to Sleep is a decent Psychological thriller, it has a good cast, the premise was interesting, and there’s enough uncertainty to make you want to find out what really happened. Of course, it has flaws, but yet, they did not ruin the experience for.
Have you read the book before? I’ll love to know your thought about book and the movie, by comparing them and I’ll love to know what you think in the comments, and if you have not watch the movie, if you love Psychological Thriller, you will find the movie interesting.
