Finally Back to School
My son Ryzen hasn’t had class for a whole week, since classes were suspended due to rising dengue cases. And yesterday was his first day back.
Actually, Ryzen and I were both excited, especially Ryzen, because he’s been asking every single morning if he has school.
Why Classes Were Suspended
The government decided that instead of regular lessons, the day was set aside for everyone to clean the school surroundings... Like clearing the stagnant water, removing the trash, and doing everything to stop mosquitoes from breeding.
The school suspension was necessary and wise, as dengue cases have been rising in our province. So, dengue prevention is something none of us take lightly. We’ve heard stories from neighbors, and know how quickly dengue can spread... especially in places where water collects and sits still.
When we arrived at school, Ma’am Irma wasn’t there yet. So the kids took the chance to play first. Ryzen grabbed the puzzle box. He loves puzzles so much.
Ryzen started connecting the puzzle pieces one by one… but soon realized that so many pieces were missing. Out of all the puzzle pieces, only 3 pieces fit together correctly. 😅 The rest were gone. Maybe lost somewhere between last school year, or maybe borrowed and never returned.
Actually, a puzzle is perfect for preschoolers because puzzles teach children patience and persistence. Even though Ryzen and his schoolmates couldn’t finish the puzzle, the children kept trying... turning pieces, experimenting, figuring things out on their own. Some pieces clearly didn’t belong, as they had different pictures... but Ryzen tried them anyway, just to be sure. Two of Ryzen's classmates also gathered around, pointing, suggesting, and handing pieces. Hehe, such cute and determined little ones. (Read more about puzzle benefits here.)
When Ma’am Irma arrived, the children tidied up. Then I turned on our classroom’s brand-new aircon! 😆 Yes. That aircon was a parent project.
The new classroom aircon was something we parents had all been looking forward to for weeks.
Each parent contributed ₱75, and raised ₱1,500 to pay the technician for installing and connecting the aircon. We were all so excited to have it.
Then Ma’am Irma started the lesson... all about numbers. The children did some writing and answering activities, and Ma’am Irma also let the kids write on the blackboard. Ryzen loves it. He always raises his hand and participates. 🥰
I felt proud every time I saw that confidence in Ryzen... that he’s not afraid to try, not afraid to stand up in front of his friends and give it a go.
Ryzen walked up to the board and carefully formed the numbers just as Ma’am Irma had taught him.
Then, as I opened the door for a bit, the wind outside felt way cooler than the aircon air. I thought maybe the classroom just needed time to get cold.
Perhaps the classroom was still warming up from earlier, and soon we’d feel that nice, refreshing breeze we’d been hoping for. I waited a little while, sitting, watching the children work.
When snack time came, Ryzen and I stepped out to buy some juice. The moment we opened the door as we went back in... I could really feel the trapped heat rushing out. 😓 That’s when I thought and suggested opening all the doors and windows instead of forcing the aircon. Everyone agreed. And instantly… The fresh air flowed in, and that felt so much better and more comfortable.
Yesterday was just a simple but meaningful day.
