So, I'm testing out a new app that our very own @tibfox is working on, and it resulted in a post being created. That said, it's not entirely terrible that it's forcing me to write something, so here I am.
In all fairness, I should share a bit of what's happening here in Ecuador, where I'm currently living, since there's a good chance I might be offline a lot more than normal.
We're going through what I'm told is a once-in-a-lifetime event. The warm ocean current called "El Niño" (Spanish for "the child") is wreaking havoc.
Without a doubt, if Ecuador were a little more relevant on the world stage, there would be twenty-four-seven coverage of the situation here. But alas, this is just a tiny country that sells bananas.
The city where I was born is currently underwater, and that's not hyperbole. The videos are easy enough to find on Twitter, but a new one seems to pop up every single hour, because that's how much chaos is unfolding.
A local man told me yesterday that his family lost their livestock. Eight pigs were swept away by a river that normally runs underground.
The beaches are full of trees and mud, so even going to the beach around here isn't particularly pleasant these days. But hey, at least we're healthy, and that's what matters.
The craziest part is that this is just the beginning. There are some models predicting that this could last a full year.
Yes, twelve months of this.
