[TV] The Futuristic Lagos: "Iwájú" Series Review

I'll say there were a lot of things right with this mini series than the things wrong with it. Even the thing wrong with it is just because it's something looking impossible to bring to a reality and it's quite understandable because of the situation of the country the movie is based on.

I saw this short series sometime last year and I've not gotten over how inspiring it was for me, to see another side of the country I live in, in a more positive light. The story blends culture, family, sci-fi and comedy in such a way that it is very suitable to entertain every viewer out there.

"Iwájú" is an animated mini series released in the year 2024, portraying the future of Lagos, Nigeria. The story opens with Tola Martins (starred by Simisola Gbadamosi) showing a lot of excitement for her birthday as she dresses up with technologies her father has put in place. She is expecting a dad's surprise gift for her birthday.

Well, that was cut short as her father didn't even remember her day but somehow made it up to her by gifting her a lizard, who she thinks it's not a gift to play with. Then the story introduces Tunde Martins (starred by Dayo Okeniyi), the young boy who works for Tola's father and is also a good friend to Tola and have a sick poor mum.

Both friends, on a stubborn act, travels from Tola's home to visit mainland in Lagos, a place that has different kinds of people about. One of these people is Bode DeSousa (starred by Femi Branch), a kidnapper who extorts money from people after capturing what is dear to them. His new target is Tola's father, he got his daughter.

Tola's father, Kole Adesola (starred by Siji Soetan) is raising his daughter alone, with his tech equipments as a guru himself. He is wealthy and loves his daughter so much but rarely have time for her, he is on one project to another until he finds out his daughter is missing on the mainland, a danger place for his little girl to be.

The story takes us through Lagos, not as the kind we know it to be but it tries to maintain the culture of what Lagos really is like, just in the futuristic way. I like that the characters were mostly people from the tribe that occupies Lagos, for more originality. The comedy is good too, love the pidgin usage and the villain well played. You check it out for some animated fun.
