Good evening Hive Friends!
First of all, many thanks to @c0ff33a for the #SublimeSunday challenge, as well as to @ace108 for initiating the #BeautifulSunday community.
Woke up today at around 6:00 AM, but decided to stay in bed for another hour before getting up to prepare breakfast. By 9:00 AM, I was ready to head out for a walk in the fields near my flat, along the route that leads to the beautiful Donau-Auen National Park.
I was hoping to find some wildflowers along the way that I could pick and bring home. Unfortunately, the fields on both sides of the long, winding road had already been mowed, probably to make way for the hiking event that had taken place in the area. Nevertheless, I managed to gather a few wildflowers. It wasn't a big bunch, but it was enough to create a simple yet beautiful arrangement for my home. Sometimes, a little is all you need to bring a touch of nature indoors. 🌼
A Walk Down Memory Lane
Just yesterday, a friend called me while driving and wondered what was going on. Hikers were everywhere, marching along the road towards the Lobau area! Naturally, I became curious and decided to find out what was happening. It turned out that a hiking event was taking place across Vienna's 22nd and 21st districts.
Hearing about it brought back memories of the first time I joined the event in 2023. Although the walk was only around 18 kilometers and lasted more than 4 hours, my feet were absolutely devastated afterwards! LOL. I guess I hadn't prepared myself properly for such a long march.
Below is the blog for my participation in the 2023 event called "My Torture Hike" Source
Today, I spent some time sorting through the snapshots I had taken from my balcony as the hikers passed along our street. The route was marked with blue arrows, guiding the participants in the right direction. Watching them brought back memories of my own adventure and made me appreciate those little moments when we step out of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves.
A Sunday Treat and a Little Treasure
After my walk, I headed to the Sunday flea market nearby to buy one of my favourite Hungarian snacks: Lángos! If you've never tried it, it's a delicious piece of deep-fried dough, traditionally served with garlic spread and sometimes with cheese toppings. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and absolutely yummy as always!
I also took a stroll around the market. I hadn't planned on buying anything, but, as often happens when browsing through flea-market stalls, something caught my eye. This time, it was a lovely blue-and-white sugar, salt and pepper shaker set, handmade in Poland. I found it beautiful, and at just €2, I couldn't resist bringing it home!
It's funny how we sometimes go out looking for nothing in particular and end up finding a little treasure that makes our day.
From Basil to Homemade Infused Vinegar
I also made good use of my time over the weekend by finally harvesting my basil plant. Instead of letting the lovely basil flowers go to waste, I used them to prepare a batch of homemade basil-infused vinegar.
The vinegar now needs to sit for about ten days to two weeks so that the basil can release its wonderful aroma and flavour. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out! There's something satisfying about making things at home, especially when they come from plants you've grown yourself.
Turning Leftovers into Something Delicious
And finally, I decided to use up the leftover vegetables from last week's grocery shopping. Nothing went to waste! I made a hearty beef and vegetable soup, adding potatoes, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, red bell pepper, red onion, garlic, and ginger.
The soup turned out a little fattier than I would have liked, but no worries — I have a simple trick for that! I let the soup cool and place it in the refrigerator until the fat solidifies on the surface. Then I can easily scoop it off before reheating the soup.
It's a practical way to enjoy a delicious homemade meal while making good use of whatever ingredients are left in the kitchen. After all, cooking doesn't always have to involve a special recipe or a trip to the supermarket. Sometimes, the best dishes come from a little creativity and a desire not to waste food.
A Simple Sunday, Well Spent❤️
Looking back, it was a Sunday filled with simple pleasures: a walk in nature, a few wildflowers, memories of an old hiking adventure, a delicious Lángos, an unexpected flea-market find, homemade basil vinegar, and a pot of nourishing soup.
Nothing extraordinary, perhaps, but these are the little things that make everyday life enjoyable. We don't always need a special occasion or an exciting destination to make a day memorable.
Sometimes, a Sublime Sunday is simply about slowing down, appreciating what's around us, and finding happiness in the little things.
Wishing everyone a wonderful Sunday, wherever you are!
