Recuerdos olvidados / Forgotten memories

My neighbor Maria has a problem with her gas cylinder: it's a screw-on type, the regulator is a suction type, and she only has that one cylinder.

She used to use it with an adapter, but a neighbor had an emergency and lent it to her. When she returned it, the adapter was gone. She found out the price—after the neighbor swore up and down that she had returned it—and it's completely impossible for her to buy one because it costs $24, which is way beyond her budget.

Currently, she's cooking with a spiral that someone gave her. Here in Venezuela, we call the spiral used for electric stove parts a "caracol" (" snail") and the bizarre circumstances we're living through have led us to plug them in and use them as stoves. They're like... a car without a body 😄

Well, whenever my neighbor needs to cook and the power goes out, she comes to cook at my house, because without electricity, obviously, her stove doesn't work.

These past few days, at the time she should have been preparing lunch for her son, the power went out. Just as she was getting ready to come down to my house to cook, a heavy rainstorm started.

My friend is very resourceful and got to work. She managed to light a makeshift stove in her little room. She told me it was difficult to get it going because she didn't have any fuel.

With some gasoline, kerosene, or alcohol, she wouldn't have had any trouble. The truth is, she made her lunch and now has a new experience, or a new "Plan B"—as she happily told me.

When she told me about the stove, a personal experience came to mind, something I hadn't thought about for many years, which is why I titled this post "Forgotten Memories."

When my eldest daughter was just a few months old, I was still living in my mother's house, or "the shared house"—we called it that because it didn't belong to just one person, but to the "mess" of children of the now deceased mother—.

Back then, we cooked over a wood fire. My mother had a large stove—a table with a zinc top—in the yard. The good thing about it was that the smoke drifted outside and didn't bother anyone inside the house. The bad thing was that the stove wasn't under a roof, and when it rained, we couldn't cook on it.

The first time it rained, right when I was about to make my baby's bottle, I was very worried, but then I had an idea that I used many times: with the help of a medium-sized pan and a small pot, I improvised a little stove, and since I didn't have any firewood, I rolled up newspaper sheets like torches, not to light the room, but to boil the water for the bottle.

Forgotten memories of a different past. Thanks for reading.
