I've been doing a lot of reflecting over the past few days, these past few weeks. It feels like things are slowly starting to fall into place, like that feeling that everything shouldn't be this way is finally beginning to fade. There is still a little sense of strangeness, that's true. Living alone really is strange, and perhaps that's why there's so much more time for these inner reflections. It's still unfamiliar, but it's slowly starting to feel comfortable.
I was thinking about how I've always been someone who wanted to find a person to spend the rest of my life with, yet somehow, I've had so many moments when life and that desire simply failed to meet. Life is unstable and unpredictable. We shouldn't take everything we're experiencing so seriously, because there's that old saying that we never truly are, we are simply becoming. Everything is temporary, for better or worse. That's just how life works. Sometimes we think everything has become dull and monotonous, and then, out of nowhere, an avalanche comes along and reminds us that all we really wanted was to have that boredom back. It's funny how we often only recognize the value of peace and quiet once they're gone.
I can't say I'm living through hell, but nostalgia hits hard, and it hurts. I miss things, a lot of things. But who doesn't miss the things they've left behind? Don't we all feel nostalgic about our teenage years, those days spent playing in the streets, the people and friends we're probably never going to see again? Sometimes, we simply have to understand that some chapters keep coming to an end while others are just beginning to unfold. To hell with this need for stability. Maybe a good life is really made up of these moments of loss and gain, encounters and goodbyes, things that arrive without warning and others that leave just when we least expect them.
I've realized that we also need to learn how to understand and say goodbye. I wanted it to last forever, but nothing lasts forever, and there are still so many things waiting to be experienced. Some time from now, some of those things will also become memories, things we'll miss and moments we'll wish we could go back to. Closing our eyes to what we're living right now and crying only over what has already passed is a disservice to life itself. But I can't deny that I miss things, oh, how much I do! It's a shame. Sometimes I catch myself sighing when I remember, and letting go of those beautiful memories hasn't been easy. But there are bad memories too, and it's in those that I find a little comfort, allowing the river to keep flowing beneath the bridge.
Well, being alone gives me plenty of time to think, perhaps much more than I'd like. But I can't spend too much time here. There are still things to experience, other stories to write, and new moments waiting to happen. After all, I want to have something to look back on in the future, other stories to miss and, who knows, perhaps someday, maybe alone once again, I'll be able to cry over them just as I have been doing now. Because, when all is said and done, if everything is temporary, then at least let life keep moving.
