Today I want to share a new addition to the Minueto Scores catalog: an arrangement for Piano (Keyboard) and Alto Recorder of one of the most iconic, romantic, and unforgettable ballads of the 80s: "Right Here Waiting", composed and popularized by the great Richard Marx.
About the piece and this adaptation
This piece stands out for its unmistakable piano intro and a deeply emotional melodic line that perfectly conveys the longing and devotion of the original recording.
In this version, I have adapted the main vocal line for the Alto Recorder, while the piano provides the rich harmonic foundation and iconic interludes, creating a cohesive and beautiful duet:
- Key: C Major (4/4).
- Instrumentation: Piano and Alto Recorder.
- Range & Tessitura: The adaptation explores the warm, expressive timbre and register of the Alto Recorder, contrasting beautifully with the piano's resonant chords and crystalline arpeggios.
- Technical & Interpretive Focus: For the recorder, it demands careful breath control and expressive phrasing to emulate the nuances of the human voice. The piano requires a delicate touch and subtle use of the sustain pedal to maintain a steady, supportive accompaniment without overpowering the soloist, keeping the intimate ballad feel intact.

Did you know that Richard Marx didn't originally intend to sing this song himself? He wrote "Right Here Waiting" as a personal love letter to his then-wife, actress Cynthia Rhodes, who was far away in South Africa filming a movie.
Since the legendary Barbra Streisand had recently asked him to write a track for her, he sent her the demo. However, Streisand rejected it! She left him a voicemail saying: "Richard, I heard the song; it's a beautiful song, but I'm gonna need you to rewrite the lyrics because I'm not gonna be right here waiting for anyone".
Thanks to her rejection, Marx was convinced to record it himself. Released in 1989, it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the defining signature song of his entire career, cementing his legacy in pop music.

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una nueva entrega para el catálogo de Minueto Scores: un arreglo para Piano (Keyboard) y Flauta Contralto (Alto Recorder) de una de las baladas más emblemáticas, románticas e inolvidables de los años 80: "Right Here Waiting", compuesta y popularizada por el gran Richard Marx.
Sobre este arreglo
Esta pieza destaca por su inconfundible introducción a piano y una línea melódica profundamente emotiva que transmite a la perfección el anhelo y la devoción de la grabación original.
En esta versión, he adaptado la voz principal para la flauta contralto, mientras que el piano proporciona la rica base armónica y los icónicos interludios, creando un hermoso dúo integral:
- Tonalidad: DO Mayor (4/4).
- Instrumentación: Piano y Flauta Contralto (Alto Recorder).
- Registro y Tesitura: La adaptación aprovecha el timbre y registro cálido y expresivo de la flauta contralto, contrastando maravillosamente con los acordes resonantes y arpegios cristalinos del piano.
- Enfoque técnico e interpretativo: Para la flauta, demanda un cuidadoso control del aire y un fraseo expresivo para emular en lo posible los matices de la voz humana. El piano requiere un toque delicado y un uso sutil del pedal de resonancia para mantener un acompañamiento estable y de apoyo sin opacar al solista, conservando intacto el ambiente íntimo de la balada.

¿Sabías que Richard Marx no tenía la intención de cantar este tema él mismo? Escribió "Right Here Waiting" como una carta de amor muy personal para su entonces esposa, la actriz Cynthia Rhodes, quien se encontraba lejos en Sudáfrica filmando una película.
Como la legendaria Barbra Streisand le había pedido recientemente que le escribiera una canción, él le envió la maqueta. Sin embargo, ¡Streisand la rechazó! Le dejó un mensaje de voz que decía: "Richard, escuché la canción; es hermosa, pero necesitaré que reescribas la letra porque yo no voy a estar aquí esperando a nadie".
