In the crypto world, we usually talk mostly about Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other tokens. However, traditional financial assets are now gradually integrating with blockchain technology. Recently, news emerged about a new collaboration between NEAR Protocol and Ondo, which I found quite interesting.
Through this system, eligible users can gain exposure to Ondo’s tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs using near.com. Most importantly, users do not need to bridge funds across different blockchains or worry about gas tokens for various networks each time they transact.
NEAR Intents plays a pivotal role here. Simply put, it is designed to handle transaction routing and settlement across various blockchain networks in the background, making the entire process appear relatively simple to the user. According to reports, this feature is compatible with over 30 blockchain networks.
However, there is one point I consider particularly important: Ondo’s tokenized stocks should not be viewed exactly as actual stocks. They are designed to provide economic exposure to the price of the underlying stock or ETF. In other words, merely holding the token does not grant direct ownership or shareholder rights in the underlying company, as a traditional shareholder would have.
Another point is that this service is not open to everyone; access depends on the user's location, eligibility, and local regulations. Specific restrictions may apply depending on the country.
There are also some caveats regarding trading outside of market hours. While some tokenized assets may be available during weekends or U.S. market holidays, lower liquidity at those times can lead to wider bid-ask spreads, and the token's price may deviate slightly from that of the underlying asset.
What I find interesting about this whole development is that blockchain is no longer being used solely for cryptocurrency transfers. The effort to tokenize traditional financial assets and integrate them into various blockchain ecosystems is becoming increasingly evident. However, before using such new financial products, it is crucial to clearly understand what the token represents and whether its use is permitted within your jurisdiction.
