Zano Hard Fork 6: Unlocking New Possibilities for the Privacy Blockchain

For better or worse, no blockchain in the crypto world can sustain itself for long by relying solely on outdated technology. As time passes, the need to interact with new users, exchanges, DEXs, and various other blockchains grows. This challenge is even more complex for privacy-focused blockchains; the ability to seamlessly connect with other ecosystems while maintaining privacy offers a significant advantage.

Zano recently launched its Hard Fork 6 (HF6) on the mainnet. To me, the most significant aspect of this upgrade is the effort to make Zano more accessible for other crypto platforms without compromising privacy.

HF6 went live at block 3,833,000 and has been hailed by Zano as one of the most significant upgrades in the network's history. It introduces a new type of address known as "Gateway Addresses."

Previously, integrating Zano’s UTXO-based system with platforms like exchanges or bridges required considerable technical effort. Gateway Addresses were created to simplify this process. Features such as specific balance tracking and rapid synchronization facilitate easier integration for exchanges, DEXs, and bridges.

Importantly, the legacy Zano address system is not being phased out; users who continue with their existing addresses will retain their current privacy model.

Another major change is the ability to move native ZANO tokens via non-custodial bridges to transparent blockchains like Ethereum, Solana, and TON. While transactions remain public on those networks, the privacy benefits of Zano are restored once the tokens return to the Zano network.

Previously, users could leverage Zano's privacy features by bringing assets like BTC, ETH, and SOL into the Zano ecosystem. Now, cross-chain capabilities have been extended to the ZANO token itself. I believe this will help boost Zano's liquidity and enhance its connectivity with other blockchain ecosystems in the future.

HF6 brings more than just new address types and bridging capabilities. Network validation has been further strengthened, wallet encryption improved, and measures taken to enhance mining pool reliability. To simplify payment tracking, a unique payment ID has been attached to each output. Additionally, anti-DoS protection, SOCKS5 proxy support, and a more robust RPC interface have been implemented.

Most interestingly, Zano isn't stopping there. Work is underway on the Zano Execution Layer (ZEL), which could pave the way for an EVM-compatible smart contract environment in the future. Furthermore, the 2027 roadmap includes plans for a new proof-of-stake consensus protocol named Zenith.

To me, HF6 is not merely a technical update; it is a crucial step in evolving Zano from a privacy-focused blockchain into part of a broader crypto ecosystem. It remains to be seen how many exchanges, DEXs, and bridges will actually adopt Zano integration following these changes and how much the ecosystem will expand.
