[Movie] Breaking Surface (2020) Review: A Diving Trip That Turned Into a Fight for Survival

Breaking Surface was a Swedish-Norwegian survival thriller that followed two sisters whose peaceful diving trip turned into a terrifying fight for survival.

The movie focused on Ida (Moa Gammel) and her older sister Tuva (Madeleine Martin). The sisters travelled to northern Norway to go diving together. What was supposed to be an exciting adventure quickly became a nightmare when a rockslide trapped Tuva underwater.

Ida had managed to reach the surface, but Tuva was still trapped below. She tried to free her sister, but the situation became more difficult than she had expected. With limited time, equipment and oxygen, Ida had to find a way to save Tuva before it was too late.
What made the movie interesting was how it kept the story simple. There were no unnecessary characters or complicated storylines. Most of the tension came from Ida trying to solve one problem after another while knowing that her sister's life depended on her.

The underwater scenes were particularly stressful. Watching Ida move between the surface and the trapped diving area made the situation feel increasingly dangerous. Every mistake mattered because she could not afford to waste her oxygen or energy.

The relationship between the two sisters also added emotion to the story. Their conversations and memories showed that they had a complicated relationship, but when Tuva became trapped, Ida did everything she could to save her.

Moa Gammel gave a convincing performance as Ida. She managed to show fear, exhaustion and desperation without making the character feel exaggerated. Madeleine Martin also played Tuva well, especially in the scenes where she was trapped and depended completely on her sister.

One thing I liked about Breaking Surface was that it did not depend on a large cast or a complicated plot to create suspense. The movie made a frightening situation feel believable. It also showed how quickly an ordinary adventure could turn into a life-or-death situation.

The movie was not perfect. Some decisions made by the characters could be frustrating, especially when the situation was already extremely dangerous. However, the tension remained strong enough to keep me interested until the end.

Breaking Surface was a good choice for anyone who enjoyed survival movies where the characters had to depend on themselves rather than waiting for someone to rescue them. It was tense, emotional and uncomfortable in the best way.

Rating: 90/100
