I thought My Daughter’s Father was the kind of series that starts with a family crisis and then slowly opens the door to secrets nobody is prepared to face.
The story follows Maca (Silvia Navarro), whose daughter Julieta (Azul Guaita) suddenly suffers a serious health crisis and needs a kidney transplant. What should have been a straightforward search for a compatible donor became much more complicated when a DNA test reveals a secret connected to Julieta's biological father.
And this is where the story really became interesting.
The person who can potentially save Julieta's life is connected to a secret Maca has kept buried for years. Suddenly, telling the truth could destroy her marriage and affect not just one family, but two.
Ricardo (Manolo Cardona) gave the family drama another layer because Ricardo is Julieta's father as far as he knows. Erik Hayser also played an important role as the father of Julieta's half-sisters.
What I liked about the story is that the writers didn't make the situation simple. There was no easy choice for Maca. She had to think about her daughter's survival while dealing with the consequences of something she did many years ago.
The series also explored marriage, betrayal, parenthood, forgiveness and the question of whether telling the truth is always the right thing to do.
There were definitely moments where the drama felt very much like a traditional Mexican telenovela, with secrets, confrontations, complicated relationships and characters making decisions that create even bigger problems. But that is also part of what makes the series easy to keep watching.
The 10 episodes also gave the story enough room to explore the different families and the consequences of the DNA discovery rather than resolving everything immediately. Netflix lists the series as sentimental and emotional, and that description fits the story quite well.
My verdict:
My Daughter’s Father is an emotional family drama built around one painful question "How much would you be willing to sacrifice to save your child?"
I enjoyed the combination of family secrets, romance, betrayal and the race to save Julieta's life. The DNA twist gave the story its biggest hook, because once the truth came out, there was no going back to the way things were.
If you enjoy emotional Mexican dramas where one secret can completely change several people's lives, this one gives you plenty to unpack.
