| Blattella asahinai | Oct 20, 2026 | Natore, Bangladesh |
Scientific Name: In the scientific world, this insect is known as Blattella asahinai, and in English, it is called the Asian cockroach or Asian roach. Family and Genus: According to classification, it is a species of the family Ectobiidae of the order Blattodea and the genus Blattella.
Origin and Habitat: Although their native home is Asia, their distribution has now occurred in various regions. They generally prefer to stay outside, not inside houses, but rather on tender leaves of gardens, rotting leaves under trees, or damp places with mulch.
Food: They are omnivorous insects. Along with eating human food, pet food, flowers, various vegetables such as cabbage, lettuce, and strawberries, they also hunt and eat the eggs of harmful pests in crop fields.
Reproduction: The female Asian cockroach carries the egg capsule or ootheca herself until the eggs hatch and babies come out. They produce about four oothecas in their lifetime, each averaging 35 to 40 eggs.
Benefits: By eating the eggs of harmful Lepidopteran pests in agriculture, they play a wonderful role in protecting crops as natural predators.
Harmful Aspects: Due to the attraction of light, sometimes in the evening they come close to houses and can enter inside through open doors and windows. Since they look like German cockroaches, confusion often arises in the use of pesticides.
I learned about them from various sites including iNaturalist, Wikipedia and Google.
