🔧📱 Xiaomi Redmi A2+ with a charging problem. A very interesting case. Diagnosis and solution //Xiaomi Redmi A2+ con falla de carga. Caso muy interesante. Diagnóstico y solución del problema. ⚡🛠️

Good evening to the great @geekzone community and the rest of Hive.

Today, we bring you an interesting repair case: a Xiaomi Redmi A2 Plus that does not charge. A few days ago, we looked at the case of a Redmi A2 that would not turn on due to a battery BMS failure. The main difference between these two models is that the A2 Plus has a fingerprint reader. A few days ago, we also looked at a Xiaomi Redmi A2 Plus that was account-locked and could charge, but would not transfer data when connected to a PC. Let's proceed with the inspection and diagnosis, as we usually do.

DIAGNOSIS

1- We perform a visual inspection and, at first glance, the charging port looks a little worn. We are going to remove the back cover, which is quite easy on this model. First, we remove the SIM tray and then take off the cover, being careful with the fingerprint reader flex cable. Once the phone is open, we connect it to our power supply, which we will use as a tester. With the power supply set to 5.2 V, we connect the USB cable and observe that, indeed, there is no current consumption. Therefore, we will verify what the customer told us.

2- We will begin taking measurements. Once again, we will use CircuitBit to examine the path of the positive charging line on the subboard and measure the voltage at the flex connector. We can see that the positive charging line runs from the charging port to a diode and then to the far-left side of the flex connector. We measure the voltage with a multimeter and get 5.17 V. So, at first glance, we suspect that the port may not be the problem.

3- Now we will measure the voltage on the mainboard, right at the output of the flex cable coming from the subboard. We measure it and get unstable readings of 5.18 V, 6.6 mV, and 4.84 V. Initially, we thought the flex cable was the problem, so we installed a jumper wire from the subboard to the mainboard. This did not solve the issue, as the readings remained unstable. Based on the readings, we might think that the charging port was not the problem, but experience tells us that even when voltage is present, if it appears and disappears or the reading at the output is not steady, the charging port is usually the cause. Therefore, our diagnosis was that the charging port was worn out.

4- With the battery disconnected, we will also measure the voltage at the battery connector. As we have been doing so far, we place the black probe on ground and the red probe on the battery's positive pin, that is, the VBat line. We take the measurement and get a reading of 2.783 V. Obviously, at this voltage, the battery will never charge. The charging voltage that should be present with the battery disconnected may be 4.2 V. Generally, the 5.2 V must reach the charging IC, which reduces the voltage to 4.2 V. When this component fails, it usually does not allow any voltage to pass. In this case, if there is voltage at the output but it is lower than required, it is possible that the input voltage reaching it is below 5.2 V. We always leave these checks until the end because the IC and the OVP are beneath a shield that we would have to remove, which is a more aggressive procedure for the phone.

REPAIR

1- The repair consists of replacing the charging port, so we will completely disconnect the subboard from the phone.

We place it in the elevated holder, apply flux to the four anchor points, and use our hot air rework station set to 480 degrees, applying heat to both sides of the port for a few seconds until it comes off completely.

Now, using the solder extractor and soldering iron, we clean the four anchor points that remained covered with solder after removing the port.

We install the new charging port, solder the four anchor points, and take a quick measurement. We connect the USB cable and measure the voltage at the port output. We get a steady 5.19 V.

Tenemos 5.19 V estables.

2- We install the subboard in the phone, connect the flex cable, and measure the voltage at the output. We get a steady 5.11 V.

As the final test, we connect the battery and observe a current consumption ranging from 0.473 A to 0.579 A on our power supply. Now there is no doubt: the phone is charging.

We should clarify something that can be confusing and may lead to an incorrect diagnosis when dealing with charging problems. The fact that voltage is present at the measurement points does not conclusively mean that the phone will charge. This is because, in these modern phones, the charging process involves not only the positive and negative charging lines, but also the data lines and, in some cases, the ID line.

For the charging circuit to authorize current to flow into the mainboard, it needs to detect the charger through the data pins (D+/D-) or the identification line (ID). If those specific pins were broken or dirty in the old port, the voltage would be present, but the system would not recognize that a charger was connected. This is a possible theoretical explanation for why the power supply showed zero amperage even when voltage was present.

We have already seen this in countless cases. Of course, one of the main indicators is that the voltage is generally unstable and that, at the output of the mainboard flex cable, the voltage is usually below 5 V.
