Glimpses of the Border: From Bunkers to Wild Greens

It was the 17th of August when my friend Arslan called and told me about his grandmother's death. We are close friends, more like family friends. The funeral was arranged for early morning on the 18th of August in their village, which is about 25 to 28 km away from our home. This was a must-go for me, so I left home right at 8:00 AM, trying to get there well before the time. One of our mutual friends, Asif, was with me. We attended his grandma's Namaz-e-Janaza and then prepared to leave for home.

While coming back, Asif suggested visiting some nearby places. It was around 10:00 AM, so there was no real reason for me to refuse. Arslan's village is quite close to the Pakistan-India border, so we went there to look around. Asif was trying to catch a view of the Indian side by climbing up a tower, but suddenly a cop arrived and told us it was a strict "no-go" area.

So, I just took a few photos from the roadside while driving with one hand. I tried to write and share these pictures several times earlier, but never found enough time. Now is finally the time to share them, and a shout-out to @friendlymoose for sharing a photography course. I am trying to learn more and more about how to take and edit better photos.

Images with some details

Below I am going to share those images with some details, whatever I can share I will.

Canal

Right after entering Arslan's village there is a Canal and captured some of images;

Trees on Roadside

Arslan said that, here in our area, it grows naturally like wild grass along roadsides and canals, and is commonly known as wild Cannabis or Ditch Weed.

Other images are captured while we're coming back, so I don't know much about these trees...

Tower

From this 50 to 60 foot tower, people can easily spot people on the Indian side right from Pakistan.

Pillbox / Concrete Bunker

When we were exploring the area along the road, we spotted several concrete border bunkers (also known as pillboxes). These pillboxes was built half underground into the dirt. In peacetime, these fortified positions sit completely silent and empty, blended right into the rural grass. These are used during conflicts, seeing them from the inside felt quite eerie.

Flower

These flowers were growing all over the road.
