Having watched Jurassic World: Fallen Kindgom the day before, I figured I'd continue leading up to the most recent film in the franchise that I was more interested in checking out. Fallen Kingdom was quite a disappointment for a number of reasons, and honestly, my expectations for Dominion were also incredibly low. Especially considering the use of the same cast which just clearly meant it would follow a similarly average narrative rather than trying to actually do something different. I was right there. This film was more, again, on how dinosaurs are totally cute and good and how they need to be protected, with the world slowly falling into chaos with the spreading of dinosaurs into the public spaces around the world.
That alone is a somewhat interesting concept, but this was more about yet another evil mega corporation trying to control God in one way or another while also pursuing child kidnapping. Also black markets for dinos and stuff. Really not that engaging, especially with how large locusts were being genetically modified and how they'd threaten to completely destroy the world's ecology if they're released, of course the mega corp has interests in doing just that. It felt all too convoluted. All too uninteresting and caught up in its main idea to really say much or show much that felt like it was part of that Jurassic Park world. While people do want to see more, this felt like it was still reliant on the former casts. Not just in the World films, but also the original cast from the first Jurassic Park. Nostalgia bait to bring you back in if you were bored of Chris Pratt.
From the filmmaking perspective this still did nothing interesting. It had a very flat look that just wasn't very pleasing to the eye. The odd moment here and there looked kind of interesting, but nothing really stood out. What didn't help was also a significant runtime that felt like a chore as it constantly switched from one group of characters to the other, bridging the narrative together using the old and the new.
