Hello, friends of the world. If you've read my most recent posts, you'll know that I spent a couple of days in one of the most beautiful coastal towns in the state of Sucre: Río Caribe. A town famous not only for its gastronomy and the excellent cacao they produce, but also for its beautiful, idyllic beaches.

Hola, amigos del mundo. Si han leído mis publicaciones más recientes, sabrán que pasé un par de días en uno de los pueblos costeros más hermosos del estado de Sucre: Río Caribe. Un pueblo famoso no solo por su gastronomía y el excelente cacao que producen, sino también por sus hermosas y paradisiacas playas.

This time, I visited Caracolito Beach, which was relatively close to the inn where I stayed, El Picoteo de Lili, and which I had never visited before. When I arrived in town, I saw the sign and decided to go as soon as possible. The inn owner recommended taking a mototaxi from where the sign was to the beach. And that's what I did: the mototaxi charged me less than a dollar to get there and about $1.20 for the return trip. The ride takes about 10 minutes.

Esta vez, visité la playa Caracolito, que estaba relativamente cerca de la posada donde me hospedaba, El Picoteo de Lili, y que nunca había visitado antes. Al llegar al pueblo, vi el letrero y decidí ir lo antes posible. La dueña de la posada me recomendó tomar un mototaxi desde donde estaba el letrero hasta la playa. Y eso fue lo que hice: el mototaxi me cobró menos de un dólar por la ida y alrededor de $1.20 por el regreso. El trayecto dura unos 10 minutos, más o menos.

As soon as we arrived, we were blown away by the turquoise blue of the sea. Like most beaches on the Paria Peninsula, its water was crystal clear, its sand golden, and it's surrounded by mountains and lush vegetation. At that time of day, around 11 a.m., there weren't many people. We later learned that this is a beach that people usually visit on weekends and from midday onwards.

En cuanto llegamos, nos quedamos maravillados con el azul turquesa del mar. Como la mayoría de las playas de la península de Paria, sus aguas eran cristalinas y cálida, su arena dorada y estaba rodeada de montañas y vegetación exuberante. A esa hora del día, alrededor de las 11 de la mañana, no había mucha gente. Más tarde supimos que esta es una playa que la gente suele visitar los fines de semana y a partir del mediodía.

Since the beach was almost deserted, we took advantage of the opportunity to sunbathe and have a photo shoot. Without the hustle and bustle of other people, and with only the sound of the waves crashing on the sand, we felt like we were in something close to paradise.

Como la playa estaba casi desierta, aprovechamos para tomar el sol y hacernos una sesión de fotos. Sin el bullicio de la gente y con solo el sonido de las olas rompiendo en la arena, nos sentimos como en el paraíso.

Another thing we immediately noticed was the lack of beach umbrellas, instead offering a kind of makeshift shelter made of sticks and dry branches, which served as protection from the sun. We found a large thatched hut, or churuata, used for celebrations, which we thought was wonderful because it was so spacious. The rental cost a little over $3. There we stayed all afternoon.

Otra cosa que notamos de inmediato fue la ausencia de toldos; en su lugar, había una especie de ranchería improvisada hecha de palos y ramas secas que protegía del sol. Encontramos una gran cabaña de paja, o churuata, utilizada para celebraciones, que nos pareció maravillosa por su amplitud. El alquiler costó poco más de 3 dólares. Allí nos quedamos toda la tarde

Caracolito Beach is one of the famous beaches that remain closest to the town of Rio Caribe, unlike Medina Beach or Puipui, which are relatively far away. It is visited more by locals, than by tourists and maybe because of that, it is less crowded and is very peaceful.

La Playa Caracolito es una de las playas más famosas y cercanas al pueblo de Río Caribe, a diferencia de Playa Medina o Puypui, que se encuentran relativamente lejos. Es más frecuentada por los lugareños que por los turistas, y quizás por eso, suele estar menos concurrida y es muy tranquila.

Although the food and drink service is only available on weekends, we were lucky enough to find a friendly lady who put us in touch with someone who makes empanadas to order. We bought four—cheese and fish—each cost $1 and they were delicious.

Aunque el servicio de comida y bebida solo está disponible los fines de semana, tuvimos la suerte de encontrar a una señora muy amable que nos puso en contacto con alguien que prepara empanadas por encargo. Compramos cuatro —de queso y pescado—, cada una costó 1 dólar y estaban deliciosas.

On this beach, and in the town in general, there are connectivity issues. That can be an advantage if you're looking to disconnect from social media and spend a few days detoxing from bad news. Since I had brought a book, I started reading and every now and then I looked up so as not to miss the beautiful scenery in front of me.

En esta playa, y en el pueblo en general, hay problemas de conexión. Eso puede ser una ventaja si buscas desconectarte de las redes sociales y pasar unos días libre de las malas noticias. Como había traído un libro, empecé a leer y de vez en cuando levantaba la vista para no perderme el hermoso paisaje que tenía frente a mí.

Then evening began to fall, and the sea, once turquoise, turned a leaden gray, like a mirror. The waves grew gentler, and the water grew colder. Some birds took to the water in search of food, and we stood there in silence, admiring such beauty.

Al caer la tarde, el mar, antes turquesa, se tornó de un gris plomizo, como un espejo. Las olas se suavizaron y el agua se enfrió. Algunos pájaros se lanzaron al agua en busca de alimento, y nosotros permanecimos allí en silencio, admirando tanta belleza.

I live near the sea and know many of the country's beaches, and even though I've visited many, I always want to explore more. Some famous beaches disappoint me, but others, less well-known, pleasantly surprise me. And one of the ways I know if I like a beach or not is because if I like it, I'm sure I'll return. And I will definitely return to Caracolito Beach.

Vivo cerca del mar y conozco muchas playas del país, y aunque he visitado muchas, siempre quiero explorar más. Algunas playas famosas me decepcionaron, pero otras, menos conocidas, me han sorprendido gratamente. Y una de las maneras en que sé si me gusta una playa o no es porque, si me gusta, seguro que volveré. Y sin duda volveré a Playa Caracolito.
