Admission to the psychiatric hospital for lack of pedalling has been postponed

Spending some time by the Christ of Havana, in the district of Casablanca, gazing at the city from a distance is truly inspiring. Back then, when I wasn’t such a keen cyclist, I rarely went. I would look at the monumental statue by sculptor Jilma Madera from the Malecón and tell myself: “Next week I’ll go for sure...” But the weeks went by, things got complicated, I couldn’t find anyone to join me, or excuses just piled up.

Now I go more often. I’ve got the perfect excuse not to miss those magical moments there! The place feels fresh, you can hear the birds singing, there’s a shady park, and simply crossing to the other side by taking the little ferry marked Giraldilla is an adventure in itself.

This time Azrael joined me, as he had been wanting to go on a Sunday ride for quite a while. I suggested we first pick up a microphone I bought to record my cycling routes, and then head towards the pier in Old Havana.

I hadn’t cycled for over ten days because I’d been very ill with a virus or something I caught. So I tried not to go too fast and decided to take the route at a relaxed pace.

Everything’s relative, haha.

We tested the microphones. They’re cheap, but they record quite well and feature a noise‑cancelling system as well as windshields, which was something I was concerned about since I plan to use them while cycling. The preliminary tests were effective. Let’s see what ideas come to me over the course of this week. I imagine it will be something that makes me laugh more than you. 🤣

I only want them to have decent quality so I can describe my routes and indulge in all sorts of nonsense that comes to mind, which I’m sure you’ll enjoy. 😂 I promise not to go on for too long; that can be fixed in editing. Don’t worry: brief, concise, and without too much brain‑strain so we don’t complicate life.

I don’t really feel one hundred per cent ready to resume the delivery work. Yesterday I was exhausted and thought I’d sleep straight through, but it didn’t happen—I was euphoric. You can’t imagine the effect that more than ten days without cycling has on me. I feel as if I could lose my sanity at any moment.

There was a moment when I saw the storm moving over the city and I grew worried. Look at that sky over to the left. It looks beautiful, and we could hear the thunder; yet not a single drop fell. That’s how it is here — it seems as if the world is about to end, and then nothing happens at all. Azrael was certain. He told me: ‘That’s not going to fall, don’t worry.

He adjusted my brakes so I could descend with confidence. The Casablanca downhill is tricky, as it’s a two-way road with a sharp bend and a drop on the right-hand side.

Well, I’m feeling better now; admission to the psychiatric hospital for lack of pedalling has been postponed until further notice. 😏
