Plot
The movie begins by showing us a group of men playing basketball in the back of a fire station while a girl approaches from outside the fence, calling out to Chuck, who responds late and walks over to face her complaint. As she accuses him of having slept with her twin sister, our bold Chuck tells her that maybe she’s mistaken. Then his twin sister appears, and just as we’re about to see them try to work things out in a provocative way, the fire alarm goes off and the entire fire crew prepares to respond.

Well, I don't really like these sudden shifts from one movie to the next, but since we're talking about Adam Sandler's comedy movies, it's to be expected. The previous review was about Click, the best movie Sandler has ever starred in, while today I’m going to talk about one of the worst movies ever made—and here’s why. I’m not saying this because it isn’t entertaining, although that largely depends on personal taste. Rather, I’m saying it mainly because of the type of humor it uses, as well as its plot and performances.
I’ll say right off the bat that this movie isn’t for everyone—and I certainly don’t think it’s for most adults. Whether we’re dealing with a kind of satire or a stereotypical story about a male couple pretending to be a gay married couple, it actually feels more like a movie packed with the kind of sexual and homophobic jokes typical of that era. I don’t know how many of you in this community have seen or liked this movie, but what I do know is that that group must be very small. Not only because the subject matter addressed in this movie could be considered “cancel-worthy” today.
Bueno, no me gusta mucho estos cambios repentinos que hay entre una película y otra, pero ya que estamos hablando de películas de comedia de Adam Sandler es de esperarse que ocurra esto. La reseña anterior trató de Click, la mejor película que Sandler ha protagonizado, mientras que hoy les hablaré de una de las peores películas que existen y aquí les voy a explicar el por qué. No lo digo porque no sea entretenida, aunque esto depende mayormente del gusto de cada quien. Sino que lo digo mayormente por el tipo de humor que se maneja, además de su trama y sus actuaciones.
Desde ya les digo que esta película no es para todo el mundo, mucho menos creo que sea para la mayoría de adultos. Ya sea que estemos ante una especie de sátira o una historia estereotípica de una pareja de hombres que se hacen pasar un matrimonio homosexual, en realidad parece más una película repleta de chistes sexuales y homófobos de aquella época. No sé a quién de los que me leen en esta comunidad han conocido o les haya gustado esta película, pero lo que sí sé es que ese grupo debe de ser muy reducido. No solo porque el tema del cual se habla en esta película puede llegar a ser cancelable al día de hoy.

The thing is, the humor Adam Sandler uses in this movie can and does aim to offend all kinds of communities, not just the LGBTQ+ community and others. But for those of us who grew up watching his movies from a very young age—as I did—Chuck and Larry is one of those classics that’s just meant to make us laugh and have a good time for a while. Don’t get me wrong, but this is the kind of humor I’ve been used to seeing since I was a kid. It’s not that I’m homophobic or anything like that; I just find it really funny how gay people are portrayed in this story.
I’d say it’s a satire, but the plot itself and the way it was produced make me doubt that’s the case, since it tells the story of two great New York City firefighters, Chuck Levine and Larry Valentine—two completely opposite people who’ve been friends for decades. Chuck is known in his firehouse as a total womanizer and bachelor who spends all his time with women, while Larry is a widowed father who’s barely managing to support his two children while struggling to come to terms with his wife’s death. However, a problem with his Social Security will force him to strike a deal with his friend Chuck: they’ll get married and pretend to be a couple.

Pero los que hemos crecido viendo sus películas desde muy pequeños, como es mi caso, Chuck and Larry es uno de esos clásicos que solo sirven para hacernos reír y divertirnos un rato. No me malinterpreten, pero este es el tipo de humor con el cual me acostumbré a ver desde niño. No es que sea un homófobo ni ni nada parecido, solo me da mucha risa como interpretan a los homosexuales en esta historia.
Diría que es una sátira, pero la misma trama y la forma en la que fue producida me hace dudar de que sea así ya que nos cuenta la historia de dos grandes bomberos de la ciudad de Nueva York, Chuck Levine y Larry Valentine, son dos personas completamente opuestas que han sido amigos desde hace décadas atrás. Chuck es conocido en su departamento por ser todo un mujeriego solterón que solo se la pasa con chicas, mientras que Larry es un padre viudo que apenas lucha por mantener a sus dos hijos mientras no logra superar la muerte de su esposa. At first, it seems like nothing more than a simple comedy movie starring firefighters, but after the first half hour, things take a more serious turn, forcing this fake couple to pretend to be a gay couple. From this point on, things become more uncomfortable and even offensive to the gay community. The constant “sausage” jokes, the terrible acting by the leads trying to portray gay characters, and the deeply negative and humiliating way the film depicts this community are completely outrageous.
Although, like every kid from that era, I used to laugh a lot at these kinds of gags and the film’s comical and awkward scenes, watching this movie now as an adult leaves me with an uncomfortable and even unpleasant feeling about everything it sets out to convey. Or at least, that’s what you think during the first half of the movie, which is simply an endless string of homophobic, sexist, and even racist jokes and moments. Personally, this doesn’t bother me at all, and I even find it almost as funny as I did back then, but when it comes to talking to you about this movie, it’s a completely different story.
Al principio no supone ser más que una simple película de comedia con bomberos como protagonistas, pero luego de la primera media hora las cosas se vuelven un poco más legales, lo cual obliga a esta pareja falsa simular ser una pareja homosexual. A partir de aquí las cosas se vuelven más incómodas y hasta ofensivas para la comunidad homosexual. Los chistes constantes de “salchichas”, las pésimas actuaciones de los protagonistas intentando ser homosexuales y la forma tan negativa y humillante de demostrar cómo es esta comunidad en esta película es una completa locura.
Si bien como todo niño de aquella época me hacía reír mucho este tipo de chicles y escenas cómicas e incómodas que tiene, ver esta película actualmente y después grande es más una sensación incómoda y hasta desagradable todo lo que la misma busca transmitir. O bueno, al menos eso es lo que uno piensa en la primera mitad de la película donde es simplemente un sinfín de chistes y momentos homófobos y chistes sexistas y hasta racistas. Personalmente esto no me afecta en nada y hasta me divierte casi como lo hacía antes, pero al momento de hablarles de esta película ya es otra cosa completamente distinta.

La película no tiene ningún decoro y eso lo vemos perfectamente al ver quiénes protagonizan está película. Bueno, en el caso de Larry no hay mucho que decir más allá de su depresión por el fallecimiento de su esposa, pero en el caso de Chuck es mucho lo que uno se puede imaginar con la forma en la que nos lo presentan. Entonces, el chiste principal aquí no es solo ver a dos heterosexuales hacerse pasar por una pareja homosexual, sino ver a Adam Sandler ser un completo mujeriego de principio a fin intentar hacerse pasar por un esposo gay. Es absurdo, pero es la clave de esta película el hacernos reír con esto.
Si hay algo aceptable en esta película puede que sea lo que la misma película busca transmitirnos, aunque de una forma bastante incómoda y absurda. No es solo la película de dos bomberos haciéndose pasar por una pareja gay, sino de un padre y viudo intentando superar y dejar soltar el pasado y todo lo que esto conlleva. Por otro lado también está la lección -aunque poco convincente- de conocer a esa persona especial en tu vida que te hará cambiar y dejar de ser un mujeriego como Chuck, por ejemplo. Si, esto puede llegar a ser un poco rebuscado, así que prefiero quedarme con lo que nos transmite el caso de Larry.

As for the performances… the only standout aspect of this cast is the hilarious duo of Adam Sandler and Kevin James in the lead roles. While Sandler always does a good job of making us laugh—even with the sexist and racist humor he employs in this movie—James also does an excellent job of making us laugh with his acting style, his delivery, and the constant humiliating moments he provides. Physical comedy is also its real strength, to be honest. Aside from that, there are a few characters who stand out in one way or another, but most of them are just laughable.
Last but not least, let’s talk about the film’s audiovisual aspects. While it’s not one of its greatest strengths, both the cinematography and the overall visual presentation aren’t too bad. Of course, setting aside all the makeup, costumes, and various visual or physical elements used to make those sexual and sexist jokes, the visuals are still decent. The film doesn’t go out of its way to give us scenes beyond the suggestive, awkward, and funny. It also has good sound effects, but nothing compared to its excellent soundtrack.
Personally, I'd give it a 6.5/10 as far as the comedy genre is concerned.
En cuanto a las actuaciones pues… lo único destacable de este elenco es la divertida dupla que hacen Adam Sandler y Kevin James como protagonistas. Si bien Sandler hace siempre un buen trabajo para hacernos reír aún con el tipo de humor todo sexista y racista que maneja en esta película, James también hace un trabajo excelente haciéndonos reír con su forma de actuar, expresar y los constantes momentos humillantes que nos ofrece. El humor físico también es su gran fuerte, la verdad. De resto, hay uno que otro personaje que resalta de alguna manera u otra, pero la mayoría solo dan risa.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película. Si bien no es de sus mayores fuertes, tanto la fotografía como todo el apartado visual que tiene esta película no está tan mal. Claro, quitando toda la parte del maquillaje, vestimentas y diversos elementos o recursos visuales o físicos para hacer esos chistes sexuales y sexistas que tiene, igual está decente la misma. La película no se esfuerza mucho en darnos escenas más allá de lo sugerente, incómodo y gracioso. También tiene buenos efectos de sonido, pero nada comparado con su excelente banda sonora.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 6.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia.
