Hello, horror fans. By the time I share this review with you, it will already be November 1, but I still don’t want to miss the chance to share my thoughts on one of the scariest movies—and the perfect one to watch and enjoy on this after Halloween night. A supernatural horror film that I used to watch as a preteen and that has been one of the biggest box office hits of the past two decades, along with its entire franchise. Insidious was co-produced and directed by James Wan, and stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Barbara Hershey. Discover one of the visually scariest movies of this century.

Plot

The film begins by showing us the interior of a house in the middle of the night. The camera slowly zooms in on a sleeping child’s bedroom, and as it slowly pans, we see the shadow of a person watching and moving outside the window. Finally, the camera settles on the mirror in the bathroom, where we see the reflection of an elderly woman—pale, with her eyes closed and disheveled white hair—holding a candle. Immediately afterward, we see a woman who appears to be the couple’s wife wake up from her sleep, go to the bathroom, and then head downstairs to start unpacking.

Trama

This is another one of the horror movies I was most eager to share with you in this “Month of Horror” special—even if it’s a little late to do so now. It’s a movie I remember watching a few times on cable TV at home when I was a preteen, and since it’s practically from the last decade, it’s obviously one of the ones I remember best. It’s true that its tone and some aspects of its audiovisual style seemed somewhat familiar to me compared to other horror movies I’d watched a lot back then—until I discovered that the director is actually the co-creator and producer of those very franchises.

But what really struck me most about this movie is the level of tension and even some of the jump scares it features. Yes, I know—it’s a bit embarrassing to admit that a couple of jump scares, which are actually quite predictable, scared me—but remember, I was a teenager back then, so it’s obvious I was going to be scared at the time. However, when I watch it today, it doesn’t have the same impact on me—though that might be because I know what to expect over the course of its more than an hour and a half runtime. Still, I’ll admit that the film’s audiovisual quality is worth praising, as are its plot and characters.

The movie introduces us to the Lambert family, consisting of parents Josh and Renai and their three children: Dalton, Foster, and little Kali. They’ve just moved into a huge suburban house where a minor, seemingly harmless accident occurs in the attic. The brave Dalton takes a blow after falling down the stairs, but something strange happens right after that, suddenly scaring him. The next day, little Dalton can’t wake up; he seems to be in a very deep sleep—nothing like what doctors would diagnose as a coma. Three months later, not only do things not improve, but they actually get worse due to certain supernatural occurrences.

I like how the movie quickly hooks you with what it shows in its opening minutes. And not only that, but it also introduces us to the Lambert family in a very natural way. I also really like the balanced way in which everything takes a turn for the worse, gradually introducing supernatural elements. It starts with simple apparitions and some paranormal activity, and ends with a full-blown supernatural spectacle packed with scares and a mind-blowing ending. That ending is what I remember most clearly from the first time I saw this movie—honestly.

The story has a certain plot that actually makes sense up to a certain point in the movie—especially when you take into account all the interconnected supernatural elements. I like how they depict the “afterlife” as a completely dark space where it’s hard to follow a path without getting completely lost first. There’s also the theme of the “travelers” and the way they’re so skillfully woven into the story and the main characters. It’s as if this ability to travel to the afterlife isn’t presented as a superpower or a supernatural ability, but rather as a kind of curse, since it opens the door to some pretty dangerous entities.

Now, I suppose the goal of this movie is to highlight the supernatural entities themselves more than the main family of protagonists. I’m not saying they lack personality or anything—just that, compared to the “demon with fire on its face” and other entities we see throughout the movie, this family hardly stands out at all. The “journeys” to the afterlife that both the protagonist and his son take toward the end of the film end up being nothing more than a side effect of what we eventually see in the finale. The film also barely delves into the origins of these supernatural entities; it simply shows them with a distinctive trait.

That last part is something I actually liked about the movie, aside from the typical clichés and the abundance of tense scenes and predictable jump scares they throw at you. I’m particularly struck by the “demon” that appears throughout the film and seeks to take possession of the lifeless body of a nine-year-old boy. There are certain ways in which we begin to sense this entity’s presence—whether through sound effects dedicated to it or a particular song that stands out from the rest of the soundtrack because of its seemingly cheerful and upbeat rhythm. However, the way this song conveys something darker beneath the surface serves as an introduction to the demon we see at the end.

As I mentioned earlier, the film’s greatest strength lies in its audiovisual elements and high production value—which is to be expected from the same director behind SAW and other major horror films we would later come to know, such as The Conjuring. Insidious serves as a perfect precursor to the subsequent successful franchise, thanks to its pacing, dark and cold tone, cinematography and camera work, shots, motion effects, camera angles, and wide-angle views—mostly static or with minimal movement—among other elements. Even the use of color palettes—gray, cool, and dark—in most scenes is a hallmark of James Wan himself.

However, Insidious manages to set itself completely apart from Wan’s other major horror films, such as SAW, due to its complete lack of graphic and gory content. What stands out in this film are its visual effects—both practical and computer-generated—which blend seamlessly with the cinematography and sound design. All of this comes together to present a series of supernatural, tension-filled scenes that feel as real and authentic as possible. These sound effects can even be too intense—enough to really scare you. The soundtrack also plays a major role, especially during moments of high suspense. Well, here’s my latest horror recommendation.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating when it comes to the supernatural horror genre.
