I sensed them long before I saw them: a burst of new magic in the Great Lowlands. Bright, uncontrolled, frightened. I knew it was her, “La Niña.” I ran through the tall grass and… by the time I got there, the battle had already begun.
I saw Ember screaming, I saw Jolius Blast up front scanning the area, and I saw those red eyes emerging from the darkness. They were firing that ugly purple magic that rots everything it touches. They were heading straight for her.
So I did the only thing I know how to do: I cast Silence.
The air grew heavy and warm. All sound died away. I watched as their mouths opened to scream, but nothing came out. Their purple magic shrank, grew weak, and became useless. And in that split second, I saw him leap: Buns.
Always so brave, in his brown leather armor, his slightly crooked glasses, and his spear. He stood in front of La Niña and let all that weak magic hit him in the chest. His Armor of the Void absorbed it all—not even a scratch remained.
-"Buns."
I said, stepping out from among the ruins. My blue light still surrounded me.
He looked at me in surprise...
-"Nattosenpai! Are you here?".
I nodded; La Niña was staring at me intently. I could feel her magic inside her calling out to mine, as if we knew each other.
She approached, trembling…
-"What’s happening to me?".
I knelt down in front of her and placed a hand on her shoulder.
-"Your magic isn’t meant for fighting, little one. It’s Rift Magic. The same magic that brought you here. I was the Silence that saved you."
Jolius laughed with relief.
-"No wonder! Culebro with his sword, Buns with his armor, and you with your Silence. We’re invincible."
I wanted to smile, but I couldn’t. Because I looked toward the camp, where @henruc and @culebro are guarding our lands. The sky above the rift was turning dark purple—very dark.
-"There’s a problem," I told them, "The rift you’re looking for… is awakening. And something very big on the other side wants to cross over. Something that neither Culebro nor Henruc will be able to stop on their own."
La Niña looked at me, but without fear now. Her chest was glowing.
-"What do we do?," she asked.
I looked into her eyes.
-"I need to teach you how to open it. You’re the only one who can do it."
I couldn’t smile for very long. Because what I was feeling wasn’t just a rift opening.
It was Praetoria crying.
Centuries ago, when the Astral Bridge between the Splinters broke, we Riftwatchers swore to guard the edges of the world. I am one of them. That’s why I can weave Silence. It’s not just magic—it’s denying the enemy’s power. It’s what we use against the Legion of Chaos when they try to whisper through the Void.
What this girl has in her chest… isn’t ordinary Summoner magic. It’s Pure Rift Magic. The same magic that created the Great Rift after the fall of Mortis.
-"Listen to me, little one," I said as we hurried toward the camp where Henruc and Culebro were waiting for us. "You weren’t summoned. You fell."
Buns looked at me over her glasses, gripping her spear tightly.
-"What do you mean?," asked Jolius.
-"I mean she isn’t from this Splinter. Neither from Order nor from Chaos. Her magic doesn’t use mana; she is The Key. The red-eyed monsters that attacked us weren’t savages. They were Shadowhunters, beasts of the Void sent by the Legion to track unstable rifts. That’s why they could smell her from kilometers away.”
The Girl clutched her chest, where her light was pulsing ever more strongly.
-"That’s why your Void Armor was able to stop them, Buns," I told her. "Your armor doesn’t block normal magic. It blocks the Void. You’re a natural Riftwatcher, even though you didn’t know it."
We reached the hill and saw it. The camp on our plots of land. Henruc was standing next to Culebro. Culebro—with his massive armor and the scar from so many battles against the Legion—had his sword planted in the ground. They were staring at the center of the camp.
There it was... The Rift.
It wasn’t the small portal that Jolius thought had brought her here. It was an open wound in the air—purple, black, and blue—spinning like an eye. And from the other side, we could hear it.
A roar.
-"Oh no," whispered Ember.
-"It’s coming..." I said. "It’s a Doctor Blight, or something worse. Something the Legion sent to secure this rift and bring the rest. If it gets through, Praetoria falls. And so do our lands."
I turned toward La Niña. The only one who could close it from this side.
-"We Riftwatchers close the rifts from the outside. But you can open and close them from the inside. Because you were born in the space between worlds."
I placed my hands on hers. I felt her power burn—cold and hot at the same time.
-"I’m going to lend my Silence to silence what’s coming from the other side. Buns will lend his Void Armor so it doesn’t consume you. But you have to decide. Do you close it forever and stay with us in this Splinter... or do you open it to go home, knowing you might let the Legion through?"
The rift pulsed... more strongly...
And the entire meadow fell silent, waiting for his answer.
-"Buns".
Dije saliendo de entre las ruinas. Mi luz azul todavía me rodeaba.
Él me miró sorprendido...
-"¡Nattosenpai! ¿Estás aquí?"
Asentí, La Niña me miraba fijamente.
-"Necesito enseñarte a abrirla.
-"Oh no", susurró Ember.
Me volteé hacia La Niña.
