Hello, fans of good music. That’s right, today is Tuesday, which means it’s time to talk about good music on my blog and in this great Hive community. As is customary around here, every Tuesday we dedicate a special post to discussing those rock songs and bands that have played an important role in the past—in my case, during my teenage years and youth. This time, we won’t stray too far from the genre, as we’ll be talking about an Alternative Rock band that I find very hard to forget.
The band I’m talking about today is none other than Jet, an Australian band formed in 2001 that rose to popularity in that decade following the release of their debut album. Their powerful, nostalgic sound, reminiscent of the ’60s and ’70s, led them—along with other bands of that era—to revive the well-known subgenre of Garage Rock, a variation of Punk that managed to stay alive thanks to this “new generation” of artists and bands. Next, I’ll share with you the three most popular and memorable songs by this amazing band.

Como ya es costumbre por aquí, todos los martes le dedicamos una publicación especial donde hablamos de esas canciones y bandas de rock que han sido parte importante del pasado, en mi caso, de la adolescencia y juventud. En esta ocasión no nos iremos tan lejos del género, ya que mencionaremos a una banda de Rock Alternativo que me es muy difícil de olvidar.
La banda de la que les estoy hablando hoy es nadie más ni nadie menos que Jet, una agrupación musical australiana formada en 2001 y popularizada en aquella década luego del lanzamiento de su álbum debut. Su sonido fuerte y nostálgico de la época de los años 60 y 70 los llevó a revivir -junto con otras bandas de la época- el conocido subgénero del Garage Rock, una variación del Punk que llegó a mantenerse vivo gracias a esta “nueva generación” de artistas y bandas. A continuación, les compartiré las tres canciones más populares y recordadas de esta grandiosa banda.

Let’s start off on the best possible note with the most distinctive, unforgettable, memorable, and unsurpassed song by this great Australian rock band. Whenever we hear the name Jet, this song automatically plays in our minds—unconsciously and collectively—because it was and continues to be an anthem that an entire generation has deeply ingrained in our minds. “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” is the first single from Jet’s debut album, Get Born (2003).
The song is a romantic, catchy, up-tempo track that perfectly captures that Garage Rock sound so characteristic of this great band. The lyrics of “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” are a dedication—or rather, a proposal—from the narrator to the woman of his dreams. That girl with “big black boots, long brown hair” described in the song represents the woman we’d all love to have, but whose “get-back stare” clearly tells us what her intentions are.
This song, more than just a rock-and-roll love ballad, seeks to transport us back to that golden age. Whether we’re talking about the era that inspired Jet to write this song (the ’60s and ’70s) or that “golden age” that each and every one of us has experienced and recalls with great nostalgia every time we hear this song. Cuando todos escuchamos el nombre de Jet, automáticamente nos suena en la mente de forma inconsciente y colectiva esta canción debido a que fue y sigue siendo un himno que toda una generación llevamos bien arraigado en nuestra mente. Are You Gonna Be My Girl es el primer sencillo del álbum debut de Jet llamada Get Born (2003).
La canción es una sonata romántica, pegadiza y rápida que nos transmite perfectamente ese sonido de Garage Rock que tanto identifica a esta gran banda. La letra de Are You Gonna Be My Girl trata de una dedicatoria, o más bien una propuesta por parte de nuestro interlocutor hacia la mujer de sus sueños. Esa chica de “big black boots, long brown hair” que describe la canción es para todos esa mujer que desearíamos que fuera nuestra, pero que igualmente su “get-back stare” nos dice claramente cuáles son sus intenciones.
Esta canción, más que una dedicatoria de amor a lo más rocanrolero, es una canción que busca transmitirnos a aquella época dorada. Ya sea que estemos hablando de la época en la que Jet se inspiró en sacar esta canción (siendo la de los años 60 y 70) o de esa “época dorada” que todos y cada uno de nosotros habíamos tenido y que recordamos con mucha nostalgia cada vez que escuchamos esta canción. Let’s continue with another great song by the well-known band Jet—a song that’s very different in rhythm and melody from the previous song on this list. It’s one of those romantic yet melancholic ballads that, instead of bringing us joy, evokes the exact opposite—but in a good way. “Look What You’ve Done” is the third single from the band’s debut album, Get Born (2003). The song is known for being one of the few ballads Jet has written and released, as well as the only one to achieve such widespread popularity around the world.
“Look What You’ve Done” speaks to disappointment, primarily from the speaker’s perspective, who critically and negatively reproaches someone who has made them look “ridiculous” in front of everyone because of something they did or said. The line “take my photo off the wall, if it just won’t sing for you” can mean several things. But then there are other lines like “I can hardly hear you say, what should I do, well you choose,” which highlight the nature of the relationship the song is about. In short, it’s the message from someone who has been let down by a person they once admired.
Anyway, this sudden shift—which is quite the opposite of what this song conveys compared to the previous one—is just a small demonstration of Jet’s great talent for composing such deep, emotional, and melancholic songs. Personally, I first got to know this band through this song, since I used to listen to it—along with the previous one—very often on my old Playlist from when I was a teenager. Back then, I thought it was a song about heartbreak or something like that, but oh well. I never thought I’d end up identifying with this song in a certain way as an adult.
Sigamos con otra gran canción de la conocida banda Jet, una canción que se diferencia mucho en ritmo y melodía a la anterior canción de esta lista. Es una de esas baladas románticas y a la vez melancólicas que, en vez de darnos alegría, nos causa todo lo contrario, pero de una buena manera. Look What You've Done es el tercer sencillo del álbum debut de la banda conocida como Get Born (2003). La canción es conocida por ser una de las pocas baladas que Jet ha compuesto y lanzado, además de ser la única en llegar a popularizarse de tal manera en todo el mundo.
Look What You've Done nos habla de la desilusión, más que nada de parte del interlocutor quien reprocha de forma crítica y negativa a alguien que lo ha hecho quedar en “ridículo” ante todos debido a algo que hizo o dijo. La frase “take my photo off the wall, if it just won't sing for you” puede significar diversas cosas. Now, to wrap up this great list on a high note, let’s move on to a song that has literally been with me since childhood—completely unconsciously. I’m talking about a song by Jet that, without my having the slightest idea until just recently, has been part of one of the best soundtracks in one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen. I’m talking about Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, a movie that is literally one of the best sequels in the history of cinema.
“Hold On” is a song that isn’t included on any of the three albums Jet has released throughout their entire career. And if it weren’t for the magic of the internet—and the fact that I like to do a little research and read up on each band I talk about every week in this special section—I would never have known that this nostalgic and emotional song was produced by the very same garage rock band that brought us their previous songs. Although now that I take a closer look at the song’s rhythm and lyrics, the resemblance is obvious.
The song tells the story of someone who clings tightly to something that defines them exactly as they are, but everyone around them—even their loved ones—disapproves or distances themselves from them because of it. The lyrics describe how difficult it is for someone to hold on to something that’s part of their identity, yet causes so much pain and anguish to others. The irony of this song is that I clearly remember it playing in that ironic scene from Spider-Man 2 where we see the protagonist trying to be an “ordinary person” after taking off his “mask”, which turned out to be his true identity.
Ahora, para finalizar de la mejor manera esta gran lista, vamos con una canción que me acompañó literalmente desde mi infancia y de manera totalmente inconsciente. Estoy hablando de una canción de Jet que, sin saberlo en lo absoluto hasta hace nada, ha sido parte de una de las mejores bandas sonoras que ha tenido una de las mejores películas de superhéroes que he visto en mi vida. Estoy hablando de Spider-Man 2 de Sam Raimi, una película que literalmente es de las mejores secuelas que existen en la historia del cine.
Hold On es una canción que no es parte de ninguno de los tres únicos álbumes que han sacado Jet en toda su carrera. Y si no fuera por la magia del internet y que me gusta investigar y leer un poco de cada banda de la cual les hablo cada semana en esta sección especial, nunca hubiera sabido que está canción tan nostálgica y emotiva fue producida por la misma banda de Garage Rock que nos ha traído las canciones anteriores. Aunque ahora que me fijo bien en el ritmo que tiene y la letra de la canción es evidente el parecido.
La canción nos habla de alguien que se aferra fuertemente a algo que lo identifica tal y como es, pero que todo su alrededor, incluso sus seres queridos, no lo aprueban o se alejan de él por eso. La letra nos describe lo difícil que es para alguien aferrarse a algo que forma parte de nuestra identidad, pero que trae tanto dolor y angustia a los demás. Lo irónico de esta canción es que recuerdo bien que suena en esa irónica escena de Spider-Man 2 donde vemos al protagonista intentar ser una “persona común”, luego de abandonar su “máscara”, lo cual resultó ser su verdadera identidad.
