The latest episode of the series delivered plenty of surprises that finally brought the Manhunter storyline and the mysterious murder of Green Lantern Hal Jordan to a close. The events that took place from 2016 to 2026 in the town of Rushville, Nebraska, finally make sense, closing this ten-year-old case. But is this season finale any good? I have a feeling that many people—including myself—started watching this series expecting to see Hal Jordan’s death resolved. Many people theorized that he would be revived thanks to the ring’s power, or that the Hal we had been seeing throughout the series was a clone or something similar. Now that we have the answer, I would dare say that this story uses Hal Jordan as bait so that we can get to know John Stewart.
Review
The episode begins with the final scene from Episode 5, in 2016, right after John took Hal’s ring and left him in the motel ruins. Sheriff Kerry Kane went to the site to help the badly injured Hal Jordan, and he told her that he would probably be expelled from the Green Lantern Corps for being responsible for the attacks against the townspeople. He would then be tried by the authorities of Earth and imprisoned—and that is exactly what happened. He had to serve a ten-year prison sentence.
During that time, Hal stayed in contact with Sheriff Kerry until they developed a long-distance intimate relationship—intimate enough for her to divorce her husband and welcome Hal home with a box of beers after his release from prison. Apparently, several months pass, and we see Hal and Kerry on a romantic date at a restaurant in Rushville. As expected, everyone around them looks at Hal with hatred and contempt. Fortunately, the sheriff defends her boyfriend by speaking highly of him in front of everyone present. This moves Hal, and the two spend the night together.
Now that we already know the truth about Hal Jordan’s death, I realize that these sweet moments with Kerry are heartbreaking to watch, considering the miserable life Hal has had. Despite his mistakes, he was one of the greatest heroes on the planet, and little by little he lost everything: family, friends, and romantic partners. He reached a point where all he had left was an alien carnivorous plant as a pet, and his purpose in life was to make amends for his mistakes for as long as he could. His only happiness was in the hands of Sheriff Kerry. And just when everything seemed to be getting better, tragedy suddenly appeared, refusing to let him be happy for very long.
Continuing with the episode, one night Hal serves dinner to his pet Earl when some bandits set his house on fire with Molotov cocktails. Without the ring, Hal does everything he can to escape with Earl, but he becomes trapped in the flames. When he awakens, he finds himself in a strange room, where he encounters none other than Noah—Kerry’s son and Zoey’s nephew—who introduces himself as the last surviving Manhunter. Noah saved Hal’s life on the condition that he not reveal his secret to anyone or interfere in his affairs. But Hal ignores him and investigates Noah’s daily activities, discovering that Noah possesses the interdimensional portal we saw in the previous episode.
Sinestro told John Stewart all of this, revealing that Noah was the one who freed him from prison in order to keep him captive on that inhospitable, fear-ridden planet. When John asked why he had brought him there, Sinestro refused to speak, so after a little medieval torture, he admitted that he had built him a lantern—the object Green Lanterns use to recharge their rings.
The lantern Sinestro apparently forged is slightly corrupted by the essence of fear, but it works for recharging a Green Lantern ring. For some reason, Sinestro tries to convince John to recharge his ring, but he is stopped by the “Halogram,” who does not trust the supervillain. John concludes that Noah wants revenge against the Guardians of Oa and commissioned the lantern from Sinestro for that purpose. But if he has not stolen Guy Gardner’s ring yet, it is because he is still hesitant to do so.
Hoping to change Noah’s mind, John leaves the site with the lantern, abandoning Sinestro on that inhospitable island. On the way back, the “Halogram” recommends that John recharge the ring to confront Noah, since it has very little power left. Apparently, however, once he does so, the ring will reboot and the “Halogram” will disappear permanently.
Okay, let’s take a brief pause here to discuss a few things. I had my slight suspicions that Noah might be a potential threat ever since that last conversation he had with Zoey, but honestly, I never imagined that he would actually be a Manhunter. Later in the episode, it is revealed that he is a human-Manhunter hybrid, since he is Kerry’s biological son. She became pregnant after Zoey applied cellular regeneration to help her regrow her finger. It is unknown whether Zoey deliberately conceived him to find a way to reproduce, but that is certainly possible.
This revelation—that Noah is a potential antagonist—doesn’t completely convince me, but it doesn’t bother me either. I mean, it seems extremely exaggerated that this character was the one who freed Sinestro from prison, and that he is said to be incredibly powerful when he does not appear to be anything special. I think using extraterrestrial elements in this ordinary setting, where humans behave like aliens, makes it difficult for me to see them as beings capable of truly great things. The narrative makes sense from this perspective, but it does not completely convince me.
Continuing on: When John returns to Earth through the interdimensional portal, he ends up falling into a warehouse, where Noah ambushes him and takes his ring. I want to believe that Noah possesses tremendous strength, which is why John does not try to fight him—because otherwise, it would make no sense for him to surrender so easily to Noah’s demands. Without a weapon and knowing that the ring has no energy, John obeys Noah and drives to the football field, where the town’s most important game is about to take place.
They are very similar, having both been raised to fulfill a destiny. Noah is not yet a fully committed antagonist; he constantly questions his motivations and ambitions. There is a rational voice in his head telling him to act according to his instincts, and he cannot stand listening to it. During a moment of clarity, Noah tells John that he was the one who killed Hal Jordan and asks him to end his life before he becomes a monster.
The young man goes off to play his final football game as if it were the last of his life. Meanwhile, John wonders what to do, so he goes to Sheriff Kerry to clear things up. That is when the truth is revealed: The person responsible for Hal Jordan’s murder was not Noah, but Kerry.
On the night Hal and John saw each other for the last time, after leaving the diner, Hal went to the football stadium to meet Kerry and confront her about Noah’s secret. Hal only wanted to protect her, but Kerry panicked and, in an impulsive act, shot her boyfriend in the head. That is the harsh truth behind this mystery: Earth’s first Green Lantern was betrayed and murdered by the person he loved most. This version of Hal Jordan’s life ended in tragedy in the most anticlimactic way possible. And it really does seem to be a definitive death—although I seriously doubt it, since actor Kyle Chandler has done an excellent job in the role.
After learning the truth, John decides not to kill Noah and promises that if he becomes dangerous, he will be there to stop him. With the mystery solved, John ultimately decides to use the late Hal Jordan’s ring and the lantern built by Sinestro to become an independent Green Lantern. He calls Guy Gardner and asks him to send a message to the Guardians of Oa, requesting permission to protect Earth as his territory.
John Stewart accepts his destiny in his own way. After saying goodbye to the “Halogram,” he recites a new oath—one he created himself—and finally takes flight as Green Lantern.
From the very beginning, this has been John Stewart’s origin story, establishing him as the Green Lantern this new DC Universe needs to see. I hope and wish that we will soon see him in a movie where the CGI can be used to its fullest potential, allowing him to truly shine with the ring. There are rumors that he will appear in the next Superman movie.
